I wonder what types of shows you get into for free. Because with that alone, its worth it if they're good shows.

Did you guys get invites for this?

We are happy to hear any feedback or suggestions for perks that you feel are more valuable. Y'all can always reach me directly at mike at ughh.com. Although, I'm always happy to engage publicly in the forum.

I suspect the first thing that might be requested is free shipping. We wanted to (and still want to) offer that, but due to a technical limitation of the e-commerce solution we use, we had to choose between VIP Pricing or free shipping, so we went with the option that is more valuable to our customers. I did some pricing analysis comparing us against other independent music sites and the VIP Pricing effectively makes us the best pricing option. Trust me when I tell you, the technical issue has been the source of my own frustration with the e-commerce platform provider over the past two weeks.

The obvious analog here is Amazon Prime. One of the things that has been going on in the background is us doing deals with rappers to buy/create exclusive material and working with them to do deals to get subscribers tickets into their shows. For example, we recently hired a legendary rapper from nearly everyone's favorite rap group to record something for one of our upcoming releases and, in that process, we discussed the possibility of releasing his next album. A sequel to a release that many people here might consider a classic. With UGHH Premier, we'll be a doing a lot of that.

The same way you can only watch the "Man in the High Castle" with an Amazon Prime subscription, you'll only be able to get certain music by rappers that people in our community know and love through this channel.

Based on the cost of the lineup, tickets to the show will very likely be around $50. Plus the compilation album and the t-shirts as well as the other giveaways we're working on, the subscription pretty much pays for itself there.

Yes, we've rolled this out to the top 10% of our customers. Giving them early access to its features and to get their feedback on which additional perks they'd like to see. As I said, I'm open to ideas. My goal is to offer something that makes it so your experience with us is better than anywhere else.

-MK

Exclusive albums are dope, but not worth $99 per year unless you drop 1 per month of artists I support.

Also, a flight and hotel to travel to Boston for a weekend is expensive. The $50 ticket won't do shit to change that.

I think you had a good idea, but you should have offered it with the first exclusive album available. Then I would have felt pressure to get in early, especially if the exclusive release was really special.

The unknown factor ruins it. No date or headliner for the anniversary show. No list of the exclusive releases. No list of artists that you can get free tickets to see them live. You're asking for a lot of trust from me when your company was a heartbeat away from death 2-3 months ago. Take my $99 and close up shop in 2-3 months and I'm donating money to a lost cause.

The idea is actually pretty good but NWS raised great points. A lot of the stuff is still cloaked in mystery so in certain aspects, 'Access to exclusive music' and 'Free Entry to Shows in your city or when you travel' for example, there should be a little more specifics given. I'm close to NYC so say Doppelgangaz were playing next month and then Oddisee was playing in April would i be able to score free tickets to them through the Premier package? Do we have an option of 'x' amount of shows per year? How would that work?

If you guys started pressing exclusive and/or rare limited CDs ala Chopped Herring, Dust and Dope, etc, pressed say a new one bi-monthly and made them only available to Premier members then i know you'd get hella CD collectors to sign up for sure.

Inspectah Deck? Has to be right?

I was thinking Wu for sure but when he said "A sequel to a release that many people here might consider a classic." the idea of Deck went out the window unless heads think Czarface 3 was a classic.

^^^Maybe Icon is willing to give them a couple Gs for the exclusive album..

I'm sure most washed up rappers that a lot of people admire on this site would do much more for a G or 2..

Just a thought.

City Hall used to Pay Mac Dre 70gs for an album and then they'd make 4 or 500k off it.

For the individuals who received the invite email, the discount alone makes it worth subscribing to. You will receive 15% off all physical items in the store (with hopes to get it up to 20%). Based on how much these subscribers purchase, it makes financial sense to do. Someone like Wicked drops over $100 on most purchases - he would save $15 on that purchase (and get free shipping on any order over $75). If he does that once every month and a half, he's more than paid for itself in savings on product alone.

Now, let's say you make a $100, once a month.
$1200 in a year - $180 savings over the year (at 15% off) + $99/year cost of UGHH Premier = $80 saved over the year. And based on how much many of you purchase, you spend A LOT more than $1200/year at UGHH.

That is just on the product savings alone, let alone the other benefits of being an UGHH Premier subscriber.

no sarcasm, at all. i feel bad for a lot of you that u have to pay these price's. nothing against "mic". this has been going on forever here. fuckin' straight hustler's. fuck buying from ughh.

Icon - I feel like I order around 25% of my music from UGHH. If you wanted to really get closer to 100% of my orders, here are some suggestions:

1. Free Shipping - As you pointed out, this would be huge. I order a lot from Amazon Prime for this reason.

2. Pricing - I always price check with other vendors. Giving me a 15% discount might make a small difference, but most places are cheaper and offer 15%-25% coupons every month. I would say price is the biggest reason why I don't buy from UGHH. I just picked up the new MURS album on CD for $11.99 - no shipping. You guys have it for $20.25 plus shipping. 15% wouldn't change my mind.

3. Coupons - I rarely see coupons, if ever. For a while, UGHH was offering 20% or 30% (I forget) for orders over $150.00. And the shipping was free. I always took advantage of these offers. I get 15%-25% off coupons from everyone, Amoeba, The Giant Peach, etc. UGHH doesn't really offer these enough.

Some of the UGHH positives:

1. Customer service - I had an issue with a warped vinyl one summer and UGHH took care of it. No questions asked.

2. Shipping costs - UGHH has the lowest, or damn near the lowest, shipping costs across the board. The only one better is Amazon with their free 2 days shipping. But UGHH is still better than most. I would add the media mail option, $5, no matter the amount of albums you order.

3. Back In Stock - I see that you guys are able to get albums back in stock that no one else can get. I've kicked myself missing out on a couple of these that immediately went to someone else. I think the old format of the Back In Stock section was better, but either way, I like this section.

4. The Forums - I learn about albums on the forums more than any other place on the web.

Hope that helps Icon...peace. -NWS

One idea would be to offer different premier packages. For example, I don't go to a lot of shows as going to a show is not a big interest of mine. I am interested in the free shipping, discount on orders, exclusive albums/mix cds. Maybe offer a tiered premier package or a way to have options within the premier package.

Again, great feedback and some great questions have been raised. It is my hope that I can clarify some things real quick.

First, on the point of pricing:

Like I said, we did an analysis of five of our biggest competitors, directly comparing their pricing to ours for identical products that we sell. There is one competitor that is, on average, dramatically undercutting everyone. However, they have 0.5% of the products that we offer. Excluding them we are on average 8.6 - 15.2% more than our competitors. With the Premier discount of 15 - 20%, we cost the least. Ultimately, my goal is to drive the discount and our general pricing even lower, but it really comes down to this business being profitable and driving the volume of sales to be able to get better deals with distributors.

Free Shipping

As I said, I'd love to offer it, but we are limited by our platform. We are considering issuing gift cards on a monthly basis in the short term until we can switch to another solution. However, our shipping is always free over $75.

Why would rappers participate in limited availability releases?

Why do actors star in Netflix only shows? Why do rappers do white labels that only drop in Europe? Money is the obvious answer. However, there are over 100k people in the UGHH network. Once the the program matures, it is possible that their albums will actually end up getting more focused consumption through our channel than releasing it themselves.

Coupons

Sadly, coupons are actually horrible for business. It breeds exactly what you're describing -- customers that only buy when they get a coupon. It would be very difficult for us to continue going that route if we want to see UGHH here another 20 years from now. That's not to say that you'll never see coupons from us again, rather what you can expect to see in the near future, for all customers not just Premier customers, is a rewards program.

The Unknown Factors

I'd love to tell y'all everything about the release schedule, because as a fan I'm excited, but suffice to say we already have records from Cormega, Ghostface, Smif & Wessun and Statik Selektah to name a few. As far as the anniversary show, we are working on locking in our headliner then I can finalize a date and make an announcement. I can say that more than half the lineup is built from the top 25 people on the chart I shared in my post. As far as the free tickets to shows, that will be handled through a combination of relationships/deals that we have with bigger name acts and also us polling the Premier subscribers to see who they want to see based on upcoming tours and brokering specific deals based on what's popular.

You're asking for a lot of trust from me when your company was a heartbeat away from death 2-3 months ago. Take my $99 and close up shop in 2-3 months and I'm donating money to a lost cause.

I can see where that could be a concern. I hope that what you see over the coming months in the moves that we make will help you understand that we've made substantial monetary and relational investments as well as key business decisions to ensure that we are around for a long time coming.

Thanks again for all of the feedback, I'll send an email out to the list to clarify some of these items.

-Mike

Damn Icon you're getting me hyped for the concert. Sounding like Rock The Bells/Paid Dues reborn. Miss those festivals a lot

at Nassau William Senior - Our cost is more than $11.99 for the Murs CD. The store selling it for that price is likely doing some sort of advertising co-op in order to sell it for that sort of price with the label (e.g. Strange Music provides 100 CDs in exchange for displaying the new Murs CD in a flyer/ tv ad/ etc.). We couldn't even come close to that price and neither could most other music stores.

International tracking doesn't really exist for USPS anymore. You get a customs number which only kind of works.

And international shipping is expensive for anyone. You guys get it worse than us imo. Fuck people in Australia who collect anything pay out the ass in shipping and custom charges. It costs me anywhere between $30 and $75 to ship vinyl abroad. 30 if it's a single record in a light box, anything over 2lbs and it gets jacked up to atleast 50.

Still the cheapest option. Fedex or UPS will charge over $100.
