So I'm up very early today listening to some Donald Byrd relaxing. And thinking here most people on this site. I hope, know what the four elements of hip hop are...

But is there a fifth element? I think there is, and that fifth element is style, each crew / movement / lp had its own style, which was accepted and then emulated across the world, but at style has been at the crux of hip hop from the beginning.

It could be said that since hip hop is NO LONGER a sub culture but is not in fact POP CULTURE, the fifth element of Style still remains and seems to have overshadowed some of the original elements.

What's your thoughts?

Blue, its another plainly obvious answer.

Its been widely acknowledged from way, way back, in the 80's the fifth element is Knowledge.

Wtf are you going on about with "style/pop culture" being the 5th element?

The only other debate was the 5th element was Gangs. But seeing as they phased out (in NY) at the advent of Hip Hop, and became posse's, crews etc. it is a lost element.

really tho' I thought this was common knowledge, your'e question is just plain stupid.

really Blue.........

You talk as if I don't know something obvious, but in all fairness it is obvious that the four elements originating from the 70s / brons were 1. Bboying
2. MCing
3. Graffiti
4. DJing

So the fifth element has never really been officially declared but it has been debated about I guess, but style is not in elements one to four but style is obviously an element, so why the difficulty with what I'm saying?

You talk as if I don't know something obvious

^ you don't seem to

the fifth element has never really been officially declared

^ yes it has, KRS, Chuck D, RZA, Jeru, MF Grimm, G rap etc. etc. I could go on and on....just google it. They have been saying it since the 80's! I am not making this up.....I don't get your level of comprehension....? You REALLY have never heard of it? REALLY?

but style is obviously an element

^ not its not, it is part of the composition of ALL the elements and can be applied to each one. this does not make it an element alone.

What the fuck do you not understand Blue?

Arguments aside solely with myself but there are academics out there who disagree with you

"he slave owners knew that
language (and through language, ideas of the world) is the most powerful weapon in
colonizing the minds of others. Centuries later, certain groups of African-Americans,
primarily working-class, still resist the imposed language by transforming it to
accommodate their culture. Style, in terms of commodities as well as “infra-structures”,
such as ritual and jargon, are extremely important in hip hop culture. As mentioned
earlier, I believe that this emphasis on style qualifies it to be the fifth element of hip hop
culture that encompasses all of the other four; DJ’ing, rapping, graffiti, and break-dance
that are all style-based expressions."

I have never seen it disputed as the fifth element, its been a given for 30 or so years, I thought anyone into Hip Hop had at least this rudimentary knowledge, Zulu Nation laid it down back in the day, pretty much all the big names in Hip Hop have mentioned it in interviews etc. there was some debate as I said over it being gangs, and beatboxing has figured but never really been taken seriously

just typing it into Google will bring up the same answer, I am amazed you never heard it.....

this thread please as it's getting stupid

^ it got stupid in the op

in the words of Jeru as I know you are a fan of deep lyrical breakdowns

"Knowledge wisdom understanding like King Solomon's wealth
You're a player but only because you be playing yourself"

which funnily enough mentions the fifth element throughout the song

its weird you post like you just started listening to Hip Hop yesterday

you really struggled with this Blue....its ok to be wrong you know

"The 5th element is diddling kids"

"Wait...what, Bam?"

"D-d-d-did I fuckin stutter? The 5th element is DIDDLING YOUNG BOYS."

"Well, how about you keep that one to yourself big guy. The rest of us will just push the 4 element agenda. It's a dumb concept anyway, but when whities realize there's a stiff structure to our movement they're gonna fall...in...love. They'll be arguing about this on messageboards and in academia for ages!"

U joking right?

It's MCing, DJing, breakdancing and graffiti. Those are the four elements.

They should ask you this question before you're allowed to create a username and start posting.

5th element is beat boxing.

When you dudes stop pretending there's still such a thing as "hip hop culture," you will enjoy the music a lot more.

b/w

What a horrible thread. Lol at thinking there's still "elements" in rap music in 2017.

88, Howard says two things, one - don't get caught up in the elements and you'll enjoy the music more. And two - he finds it amusing that people in 2017 think elements apply. So that leaves the 3rd matter a little confusing which you are call me an idiot about allegesly not understanding Howard's two points? Going over my head?

i think fashion could be the 5th. but beside's that. wtf? like i said though, the so called master of mcing" is delusional as fuck. he think's everything is a hip hop element. also i really cant stand the fact that krs think's he's a god, the best ever.

although i do give him prop's for saying ras kass was one of his favorite artist's if not his favorite. and ofcourse that was because of "nature of the threat". that song is a lot doper than most of you give it credit for. no it's not all competely accurate, but atleast 80-90% of it is. and i've done my research on that shit a lot(isis paper's).

anyway hope i didnt derail the thread too bad.
