I know there isn't much love here, because obviously he is mainstream and not gangsta. 2 massive no no's on here but the simple fact is dude is dope as Fuck. I kinda always skimmed through his music because it just didn't really appeal and his debut album was so so. But after 4YEO I revisited his whole back catalogue and damn he has a shit load of dope shit. Forest hills is top shelf and born sinner isn't far off. Plus he has just as much quality material in mixtapes and random loose tracks. I love his production and he's a great story teller, plus he is actually second to none on the hook game. Best rap artist of the 10's imo.

Hes aight. i cant get into his story telling at all, so at face value ive always seen him as a decent yet paper soft rapper/singer who can occasionally make a song i like. First song i liked by him was "grown simba" way back in 09, most recently its "neighbors"

I like a good number of J Cole songs but none of his albums do it for me...im sure i could make a banging compilation if i took the best songs from all of his projects..

Very talented and very hit or miss. I've like a couple of songs on each of his last few releases a lot but didn't feel the majority of the rest. I like what the dude is about and respect his skill as an MC and producer but haven't been impressed with his albums since his early stuff (The Warm Up & Friday Night Lights)

been a fan ever since friday night lights. i was late, and missed on the come up and warm up mixtape hype. finally got on board with fnl. i remember staying up all night, waiting for fnl to drop, before driving to vancouver to see a black milk concert and visit my brother. those were good times.

anyway, i've listened to fnl more than any other project by him:

his sample of janelle monae's song. damn. i was listening to janelle a lot at the same time this came out, so it was dope to hear cole sample my fav song from her album, like he was listening to the same shit i was. tracks like this are undoubtedly what pushed him to the mainstream.

and then he went and used that diddy beat:

i remember hearing the original song that diddy did with cassie, and being like why did diddy waste such a great beat on an R&B singer. seems like cole thought the same thing, and went ahead and used it. dope.

(NOTE: diddy was fucking cassie at the time, so he might have been biased when giving her beats)

Good stuff 88, FNL is really good, I love premeditated murder and when I'm gone, so are his other tapes. I thought his debut album was pretty inconsistent, a few nice tracks like rise and shine, breakdown, lost ones and the title track but could of been better, born sinner he stepped up that was really good power trip, land of the snakes, born sinner, let nas down to name a few but he just gets better imo on forest hills then 4yeo which I just wish he scrapped she's mine prt 1 and 2 and had a few others. I think it's funny ppl getting pissed that those two singles weren't on the album when it's a concept album and they didn't fit. Plus I think it's an interesting way to promote the album with the logic that without lead singles every song gets a chance to be judged equally. I wish if Kendrick was going to collab with anyone it was cole. Hiii power is one of if not his best track.

the kendrick and cole join project is on my list of albums never made that could have been a classic. boy, that album would have been unreal, just listening to hiii power.

kendrick and j.cole are both inconsistent to me, when it comes to albums. i agreed with what you said in the other thread about how kendrick doesn't have any classics yet. even though i think he's the best right now, he always puts one or two tracks on his albums that i could do without, including section.80 (not into keisha's song and can't remember the other tracks i cut, but they're at the end of the album). cole's the same way. i don't listen to his albums as much as i should, because they're so hit and miss. i got to get my shit together, and make a cole compilation, so i can bump his music more. cole's fucking dope, though. i saw him live a few years ago, right before he really blew up - right around the time his debut was about to come out - and he tore the roof down. it was such a great performance. the crowd was so hype.
