Wu-Tang
NWA
Tribe Called Quest
Beastie Boys
Cypress Hill

^Off the top groups that are better.

they push themselves on every album and still remain consistent, which i think is an underrated virtue about them. most groups either don't evolve at all, or have faltered when trying something new. the roots are undoubtedly up there. i wouldn't put a lot of the groups mentioned so far itt above them. i mean, go listen to do you want more and then go listen to how i got over. if you showed those two albums to someone who'd never heard the roots, they wouldn't think those albums came from the same group.

the thing about the roots is their albums haven't really had a major impact on hip hop like other groups mentioned here have. in other words, i wouldn't consider them very "influential". they're so unique - a real live band - that they kind of exist separate from the rest of the genre. also, black thought is a super, super talented emcee, but he's not really the most interesting character. he's kind of an enigma. i don't feel like i know him from hearing his songs, in the way that i feel like i know ice cube or q-tip from hearing their songs. that might no make sense, i don't know. regardless, they're more consistent than basically everyone else.

just saying option a is better than option b without making any points to validate that statement is not how you make a good argument at all. that's how a little kid argues.

Id put Bone Thugs and Roots on the same level in my rankings of groups. Cusp of the Top 10.

The only people that think Bone Thugs > Wu are delicate little snowflakes.

Id also put Geto Boys and D12 above them both.

Yo SC are you including duos cause Outkast, Mobb Deep, Organized Konfusion, etc. would be above The Roots too.

the thing about the roots is their albums haven't really had a major impact on hip hop like other groups

i get semeone putting nwa and PE above the roots, but, on a personal taste level, i'd rather listen to a roots album than an album from those groups. i don't disagree with the importance of those two groups.

the only group that i think can be compared to the roots is the beastie boys. i only say that because both groups:

- were a real band that played real instruments
- had their own unique lane that nobody else in hip hop could even try to get in
- changed their sound a lot from album to album
- had a consistently high quality of music, album to album

i can't stress how rare the combination of those last two points are. both groups were almost too consistent to the point that people can sometimes overlook how great their discographies are from front to back. the beastie boys, however, were far more influential than the roots.

^ I understand your point 88'

but I listed PE & NWA because the op is are they the greatest Hip Hop crew/group ever? And tbh the Roots, no.

Original , yes. But not the greatest, they haven't been massively influential. Take them out of Hip Hop and it would still be the same, take NWA, PE & the Wu out, Hip Hop wouldn't be the same.

i agree with what you said there.

the roots are a really nice niche group. i think they're too unique to be in consideration for the greatest group ever, since their uniqueness has prevented them from being influential to anyone else. the beastie boys are very similar, but, unlike the roots, it was their uniqueness that actually made them an influential group at the time -- white boys mixing and mashing genres while bringing a punk/fratboy attitude to the genre.

the beastie boys were also better at making big radio hits, whereas the roots have never been good at doing that. which is another factor in why they aren't in contention for the greatest group discussion.

I think the NWA thing was so influential because it showed the establishment that Hip Hop could and would say whatever the fuck it wanted, and its message went worldwide. To me Hip Hop is all about an attitude, and NWA obviously had it in spades. After they took it on the establishment was beat.....and as pointed out, their musical legacy speaks for itself.

PE did a similar thing, but just on a conscious level. They were worldwide and were shaking up the politics and empowered a lot of people.

These 2 groups were so groundbreaking I don't think Hip Hop will ever produce anything of their like again. Times have moved on.

But the climate at the time, the shit that went down, the paranoia and panic they caused....mad good times for Hip Hop. The door was opened by Run DMC, PE & NWA knocked the whole thing down. After them Hip Hop couldn't be stopped.

good points, semeone.

but, honestly, i never listen to PE or NWA. i don't mean to say that as an argument against them. i'm just kind of saying it as an aside. NWA's n*ggaz4life is way too hardcore for me. the beats are out of this world good, but the lyrics are unlistenable to me.
