my top 4 common sense albums in order:

1-Can I Borrow A Dollar?

2-Resurrection

3-Like Water For Chocolate

4-Be

after the first album he got way to serious and emotional-depressing at times even on ressurection, beats less raw after the first album until he compromised more and more and became more watered down/less rap sounding overall on "one day it will make sense" and electric circus.his style became too tame after the 1st album.

beats on resurrection are amazing but he's so subdued and serious, sad on it compared to the common sense from his debut.

I recognize resurrection for what it is...but I would rather listen to like water for chocolate, be, or one day it'll all make sense over it. to me they're just more cohesive, complete works of art.

This is an NWS bait thread and he's nowhere to be found....

Black American Again was a nice little gem that he dropped towards the end of last year. Still giving it a spin every month or so.

DAFFY...

No Mask....saying can I Borrow A Dollar is your favorite Common album feels a little attn whorish to me. No offense, I just can't think of a better way to describe it.

That album is boarder line corny when it comes down to it....Rhyming in scat etc..etc..

I honestly don't believe that is your favorite Common album.

^ chill dose. attn whore?weird cause i have friends who agree. i dont try to look any way on here- thats why half my threads are not anything ground breaking- haha. beats are way doper on borrow a dollar- real hip hop unlike the more sparse, clean more mainstream, accessible beats on all his albums post resurrection. and he has the most style, energy on borrow a dollar.lyrical content is more base but whatever.he's more well rounded as an emcee on it-more animated, spontaneous, having more fun. some lines are a bit cheesy(certain references)i will agree but a small thing. and he wasnt so serious and political yet, race card rhymes etc. which is a breath of fresh air cause starting on resurrection he got a bit depressed sounding, slowed his style down and content got more whiny, depressing, race baitish.

common fucked up his catalogue starting on one day it'll all make sense by watering shit down and only went more and more in that direction on future albums(and a couple of his albums are straight trash).he always plays both sides of the fence with some real raw tracks and then some straight watered down pop,neo soulish shit. and i cant stand that. he wants to be considered real hip hop and get the money too but he lost credibility to me after his 3rd album. a great artist, emcee, performer but to me his catalogue has a couple weak albums and a few other albums with weak tracks all over them. all the hollywood shit tarnishes my perception of rappers too.

i think its funny nobody else has said borrow a dollar is their fav one.is what it is.re-visit the debut!

Your statement makes it sound like you think those can't go together. Like it's impossible to make real hip and make money.

Its a known thing for decades that making money in rap usually means watering shit down.99% of the time it dosnt work. And it didnt work for common except in his pocket book.

And nws speaking like a closed minded fool saying lol at borrow being dopest. He actually had a dj on that album. Its the most hip hop common album.

^to you maybe. wish he woulda kept it raw not watered down. did he find his true sound or did the industry make him find one that was more accessible, mainstream?

its funny some people prefer his more commercial albums but their laughing at me for liking the rawest, most hip hop one where common styled the hardest.

not hating though.

i don't think resurrection was mainstream at all. and neither was working with the soulquarians. no id, dilla, and the roots weren't mainstream. the soulquarians changed the game, and common was a part of that, because of the change in sound he made. you might not like the soulquarians or their influence, but the majority of people seem to (whether they recognize just how influential the soulquarians were or not is a different discussion). common's career probably wouldn't have gotten that far, if he stuck with the sounds of the first album. by changing his sound, he found a wider audience, but having a wider audience doesn't immediately equate to selling out or going mainstream.

common took on a more "mature" attitude, along with the change in sound, and i think that had a huge impact on hip hop, since hip hop is such a young man's game. for someone to find wide appeal with a more "adult" style in hip hop is nothing to shrug off.

Yo no mask aka fake knowself sometimes i wonder if you even like shit like Can I Borrow or if you just like to be the dude that represents for the old school. Album is decent but those beats aren't anything special from that time period and Common was nearly as conscious as he ended up becoming which is one of his best qualities as a lyricist. Not touching the four albums i named above it.
