Been revisiting X's catalogue.

So original, guy is really one of a kind.
Spits from the heart and can write deep, introspective and hype tracks as good as anyone.
I think he gets slept on now and dismissed because he hasn't stayed relevant but don't forget what a monster he was in his prime. Wasn't he the 1st rapper to have two plat albums in the same year? Shits crazy

It's dark is hell is hot is a classic.
Watched a lot of his interviews it sucks seeing him so vulnerable, dude can't help but be himself though, one of the rare honest ones. Pac 2.0

I remember I heard him on various tracks before his debut and thought he sounded pretty dope so I of course picked up It's Dark... when it dropped and I was so disappointed because it was so weak.
Was listening to Shut 'Em Down with Onyx the other day and he is just so bad on the mic compared to Sticky Fingaz.

Co-sign. His work prior to and up until It's Dark was great. Flesh of my Flesh is average at best and since then he's been more miss than hit. While he did have the commercial rap game on lock when Ruff Ryders were peaking, he fell the fuck off as an emcee. Not even Top 75 for me.

Yeah his overall catalogue isn't top 10 but him in his prime, I don't think there's 10 mc's I'd rather hear.

was there recently a its dark and hell is hot appreciation thread? i feel like there was, but if not, that album deserves one. im bumping it in the car right now and it just had a one of a kind sound to it back then. mind u i was in 8th/9th grade around the time this was dropping but x was not only an artist that made me wanna rap (blame him) but the album really made me appreciate "the album". you know when you're a kid and you only like a song or two from the radio and maybe a few songs around it then you skip around to the next single? well this album made me not do that. maybe it comes with age, but I can't deny with unique album cuts like damien and atf and for my dogs and feel it coming, you def got a solid album with great singles. I almost completely forgot about hows it goin down, that song has aged well. I remember the video now that I heard it, but when I first put it on I was like damn I forgot about this.

doesn't take away from the impact it had, prob sold more than 25 of those 30. not that that matters to me personally but jussaying, huge impact under and above ground. launched a successful label that had a nice 5-6 year run

well duh, cap punishment was the shit, pun's my favorite, im not arguing that, but you can't just denounce the x like it didn't make a big splash that year and still to this day could be worthy of an appreciation post here. im just saying, x did something totally cool and different and introspective. all the talk of his death and how he thought he'd be dead by the time it came out, still rings true to this day and dude kinda had his own east coast tupac thing goin for him (and before anyone says it, i know what you're gonna say, pac was not east coast, i know where he's from, but his sound reps the west)x's debut was raw as fuck arghh arff

Lol at dmx making "plain shit". Dmx is inebof the most original MC's of all time. That stop start flow yelling the punches I would hate if it was anyone else (kinda how slim raps now but more tech) but it was always dope the way he did it

It's Dark isn't a Top 15 album from '98. I'd even take NORE's debut album over it. N.O.R.E. was my muhfuckin soundtrack for the summer of '98.

Revisited It's Dark... yesterday. Found myself skipping past half the tracks. Solid album but albums i listed are better front to back. Flesh of my Flesh which he dropped later that year was dookie with a side of wack sauce.

Never been the biggest fan of X but always thought highly of It's Dark... and his work prior. When listening yesterday it just didn't give off the same aura it did years ago. Majority of those other albums i listed I've bumped within the last couple years and didn't feel the same way about. Closest would be NORE but cause of nostalgia factor, it broke the tie. I'm not oblivious to the impact X had in that late 90's/early 00's but i never bought into the mega hype, even back then.

Clock your crazy. I got it 4th on your list behind pun, gangster and outkast. It's comfortably in front of the rest. Only one that is close is black star but I wasn't as big a fan as most.

He had a really personal style, that's most than most of the rappers will ever had.

I didn't listen to his albums back in the day because I had the typical "commercial rap sucks" mentality.
I still didn't listen to any of his albums, LOL. But when I listen to some of his hits now, then I wish current mainstream rap was at least of the same quality as the one from back then.

Mainstream rappers back in the day could rap. They could have shitty albums with 2 singles but they could rap if needed to. Now half of the mainstream rappers don't even know how to rap
