the album features del, blu, elzhi, koreatown oddity, chuuwee, and oddisee.

The Ordinary Man is the third solo album from producer L’Orange. Known for his early 20th century inspired style and stripped down jazz influence, L’Orange’s solo work is often very personal and intimate and the new album is no different.

Although mostly instrumental, there are vocal features from underground legends like Del The Funky Homosapien, Blu, Elzhi and Oddisee, as well as up and coming artists like Koreatown Oddity, Chuuwee & Solemn Brigham. These features cement the narrative of the album, tying together a long form story.

Conceptually, the album follows a magician from being an unknown to the biggest star in the world. Performing impossible feats for thousands of people, the magician eventually becomes disillusioned and bitter, blaming the world for not understanding his greatness.

Although dark in tone, the album is reliably playful and absurd, taking a shadowy story and combining it with the most polished production we’ve ever seen from L’Orange.

can't wait for this, definitely one of my most anticipated releases coming out this year.

concept sounds really interesting, hope it's executed well.

blu, oddisee, elzhi, etc are to be expected but i'm genuinely surprised that koreatown oddity is featured on here, can't wait to hear that track.

After a trying battle with hearing loss and a number of surgeries, producer L'Orange preps his new album 'The Ordinary Man' (out October 27th on Mello Music Group), a concept album about a superstar magician disillusioned with the world that made his greatness. Now fully deaf in one ear, this album marks a shift and growth for L'Orange towards an even tighter and developed sound while maintaining his sample-heavy knack for finding the essence of his influences in every beat.

The first single from the album is a landmark collaboration for Mello Music Group, combining for the first time two of the most prolific and talented artists on the roster: L'Orange & Oddisee. The new song, "Look Around (feat. Oddisee)" is a perfect marriage of styles. Musically, it's an adventurous exploration of traditional and unorthodox approaches.

might as well post everything else that was in the email since the thread NWS made got clipped. man, i knew he had surgery on his ear and suffered from hearing loss, but i didn't realize he was completely deaf in one ear. that's rough.

going hard in the paint with this right now

I place this album higher than most (in general and in L'Orange's catalog). I think it's a musical masterpiece from start to finish.

orchid days is easily my favorite of his solo projects but his collabs with mr. lif, stik figa, and jeremiah jae all rank higher for me. i go back to this projects all the time. the only one that was underwhelming was the one with kool keith.

still hoping that l'orange will do an album/ep with blu at some point.

i think he could pull that off, willie green did it last year with his "doc savage" album. you ever listen to that? l'orange could do the same. i mean, this album already seems to have a fleshed out concept so it really wouldn't be much different. plus, l'orange has connections to just as many talented rappers as willie green does.

at wickid- join my rap mentoring group-many should. and you should drop a super underground late 90's/early 00's west coast mix! meaning no likwit, no heiro or whoever. just shit like sub contents, sacred hoop, the shapeshifters, volume 10, global phlowtations, acid reign, c.v.e., of mexican descent, darkleaf, omid, bored stiff, etc. not all is on vinyl but you rockin digital too right?

i'll let you in on a known secret. dr octagon is one of the most game changing albums ever and after it dropped the creative nucleus of rap switched from east to west and the west ran rap from 97 till 2003-ish. just as the east was getting formulaic -all the sudden the west had all the creative indie UG shit! remember kool keith complaining about the east coast forever- then he moved to l.a.. Octagon made rappers advance their skills/originality big time.

I try not to play City Under the City too much because it's a perfect album to me and I want to keep it as fresh as possible.

I had high hopes for L'Orange but he never came close to that album again. Orchid Days is nice but it doesn't impress me that much. The album with Mr. Lif is weak and Time Astonishing wasn't that good either.

Damn i didn't realize he lost hearing in one ear. That's fucked. I remember him talking about surgery he had on it a year or two ago.

Feeling the first single. This album should be dope. While i agree that his other collab albums since City Under City were a step down, one of them was due to Kool Keith rapping terribly over what otherwise were dope, diverse beats. Mad Writer and Orchid Days my two favorite instrumental albums by him.

Gonna try to see if he'll do a Q&A in the week leading up to this album dropping.
