DOOM - Born Like This

From the cover art to the insert, beats to the rhymes, this is a straight up hip hop masterpeice start to finish. At the end none other then freddie foxxx gives DOOM the nod for dropping a classic. From front to back this album is a roller coaster. DOOM is hard as nails on this one. Whether it's the gay bashing Batty Boyz, or the cop killing Absolutely, MF Doom hit it out the park. Beats by Dilla, Madlib and MF himself plus some of the illest verses the villian ever penned puts this is up there right next to Madvilliany as the standard for dope underground hip hop. Word.

The flow is toe in, precision as an afro trim
All big letters but isn't no acronym
Smack the thin grin off a chin for crack smoking
DDT the first bar, leave this track back broken
Chrome grown man doing business with anglo-sax'n'them
Lacking swing but that banjo's so relaxing
As the wax spin, hacking axes in the wind
Pretend it's just a pen, see if you can pencil 'em in
Tense, mention men of honor fenced in
Census is tens, the wheels fall off then it's the end
Don't get keelhauled in
Villain always been, feel real genuine ballskin
Not to call the whole crowd out
It's just a few chumps, and you know who you are like a shoutout
Place 'em in your loud mouth and taste 'em like a pastry
Waste of space face hastily bow out gracefully
Disappear, reappear and disappear again
Villain not his hair, he's no afro-american
If that's the case he be a bald-headed African
Taking all the credit and jetted, astro travelling
Turn a man into a mannequin for AFLAC'n
And being tough acting Tinactin bluff jacking
He wears a mask so when he dogs his face
Each and every race, could absorb the bass
In the place to be, don't believe the hyperbole
It's like a murder spree, get sniped verbally
Or beat in the head with lead pipe languages
For street cred leave him for dead in anguishments
The slang suggest it was the guy in the glasses
Who came to help the people with they minds and they asses
You set trip and get a grip like Spalding
These walls is thin, feel genuine ballskin

Yeah. You pretty much mention that one every time you post. It's OK i guess. If you're into that sorta thing.

Born Like This kinda takes a giant German Shepard shit right on Mach Hommy's face though...wouldn't you agree Lewi?

I'm real on the fence about this album. Some track I love and some I'm either indifference t to, or plain don't like.

born like this is probably my 4th or 5th favorite DOOM album.

love gazzillion ear, ballskin, angelz, absolutely, and that's that, but all the tracks on there are good

other (personal) classics from the last 10 years or so

doppelgangaz - lone sharks
doppelgangaz - HARK
dark time sunshine - ANX
billy woods & blockhead - dour candy
cult favorite (elucid & AM breakups) - for madmen only
danny brown - xxx
shabazz palaces - black up
jam baxter - so we ate them whole
aesop rock - skelethon
melanin 9 - magna carta
eyedea & abilities - by the throat
super chron flight brothers - cape verde
has-lo - in case i don't make it
cunninlynguists - oneirology
el-p - i'll sleep when you're dead
y society - travel at your own pace

i know y'all won't agree with a lot of these choices, but these are the first albums that come to mind, i've listened to them all dozens and dozens of times over the years and i like every single track on all of them. i don't know what your criteria is for calling something a classic but these definitely are for me.

lol how am i the one that fucked it up when loewi replied first and said "mach-hommy - HBO" without even mentioning born like this. how you gonna do me like that? it got me thinking so i threw a few more albums out there that came to mind.

going back to born like this though, that album really took me by surprised when it came out because of how different DOOM sounded on there, and how much darker the album was overall. he went from the mouse and the mask to born like this, and those two albums could not be any more different lol. it's always cool when an artist releases a ton of music in a short period of time, and then takes a step back for aw while only to re-emerge years later to prove they've still got it.

supervillain intro - this album narrator's hella wack. doom must have thought he was funny or something, but it's just dumb to me hearing this guy talk

gazzilion ear - dope track. nice beat change up.

ballskin - good jake one beat. feeling this track.

yessir! - this shouldn't be on here. it's a great track, but it's on the wrong album, and throws everything off. too random.

absolutely - prob my fav track of the album. madlib with the heat, and it's the perfect beat to give to doom with the voice he's using on this album. real good.

rap ambush - wack beat. ain't feeling this track.

batty boyz - even worse beat. doom struggles keeping a flow over this one.

lightworkz - i prefer the instrumental, but doom's version is alright. i don't mind this one.

angelz - fucked this track up by adding those drums. ruined. the drumless version is way better.

cellz - love this beat, and doom's verses. the bukowski intro is so long, though. it could have been a separate track, an interlude.

still dope - great beat. empress is dope, but i prefer the instro version of this track.

microwave mayo - man, the beats are all over the place on this album. there's so much tonal inconsistency. this ain't one of jake one's better beats. here's where i wish the jake one tracks that ended up on white van music were on this album, instead.

more rhymin' - cool track. doom showing off the lyrical skills nicely here.

that's that - fantastic beat, and doom's cool over it. i wish he rapped over all these special herbs beats back in the early 2000's though.

supervillainz - this track is incredibly wack for so many reasons. the return of that stupid narrator, doom's the only emcee that's skilled enough to flow over this beat. the rest sound incredibly clumsy and forced over this beat. why bring particularly less talented rhymers like kurious and slug onto this beat? such a bad decision. then the beat itself plain sucks. no diea why this is on the album. it's genuinely awful.

bumpy's message - skip

thank yah - love this beat. such a great outro instrumental

fav tracks: gazillion ear, ballskin, absolutely, cellz, more rhymin', that's that

honestly, other than those six tracks, the rest of this album can either hit the garbage bin, or belongs on another album (see: the raekwon track), imo. at least, when sean price tried to add humor to his songs, he'd still make sure the song sounded dope.

Pretty bad review by 88 itt.

"yessir! - this shouldn't be on here. it's a great track, but it's on the wrong album, and throws everything off. too random."

The randomness is what makes this so great. Doom is a hip hop fan himself and decided to just throw us some great lost Raekwon verse from out of nowhere. You didn't catch it.

"rap ambush - wack beat. ain't feeling this track."

Beat is dope and Doom destroys this. Too many lines but here's a couple: Rot dead, hot lead, it's raining/left em' with their brains kicked in with their training/dragged the remains into the open by the bootstraps/dogtags attached to explosive human boobie traps.

"batty boyz - even worse beat. doom struggles keeping a flow over this one."

OK you just buggin the fuck out. The whole shit is classic. Literally every line is funny as fuck.

I throw this on at least once a month. Played it yesterday for the 100th time and it's still a great album. That's why it's a classic.
