if we're talking any genre, strawberry fields forever takes the win for all time best non-album single, imo. however, let's keep this hip hop.

post some dope non-album hip hop singles.

in the '00's, a lot of singles got released that were supposed to make the album, but then the album would get delayed, and the rapper would leave the track off the album, because it was too old, or for some other reason.

for example:

this, and ding, were supposed to be the first tracks off royce's comeback album after his release from jail, but street hop didn't come out for quite a while after the release of these tracks. even though they didn't make the album, they started the hype for royce's comeback, and he's basically been successful ever since these singles dropped.

i don't know the story behind it. just seems to be a single that was released, but never made it onto street level. it's pretty different in tone from the album, so maybe it just didn't fit, musically. i have no idea.

the title track that didn't make the final cut:

btw, the tracks posted itt don't have to actually have been released as singles. just post dope tracks that never made the final album cut.

this dj scratch produced track, watch your mouth, was the first track released in anticipation of 8 diagrams. the album hype was driven by the release of this track. everyone was excited for a wu-tang reunion, after hearing this dark posse cut. of course, as we all know, this track didn't make the cut, and the album was, unfortunately, disappointingly different in tone from this track.

i'm guessing this track, charlie brown, didn't make fishscale for sample reasons, but it's perhaps the best ghost/doom collab. ghost goes in over this smooth doom beat. unlike most doom beats ghost rhymed over, this one had never been released before, so it was completely new, when it came out.

when ob4cl2 was announced, people were skeptical. rae hadn't released a good album since his debut, and it was doubtful he could ever do it again. some were even annoyed rae had the gumption to name an album ob4cl2 after how terrible his previous releases were. with the release of flawless crowns and state of grace, though - the former, in particular - the doubts people had of raekwon were officially dropped. the hype machine grew from these tracks. it sucks they didn't make the cut. i think there are some tracks on the album that weren't that good. iiwii.

again, rae released a fantastic single prior to the album, and, again, the track didn't make the cut. living room was one of my fav tracks of that year when it came out, and i didn't even listen to fila, after all the shit reviews. alphabet soup was made in 2010, and rae has said in interviews, it's one of his personal fav tracks (top 5) he's ever done, but it didn't make it onto shaolin vs wu-tang, for some reason. maybe the beat/style was too raw/stripped down for the more cinematic style of the rest of the album's sound.

i think you're thinking of the album, the city never sleeps. they released it under the group name, big city. the beatnuts produced the whole album. it's got some great tracks on it, but also some filler tracks. definitely worth checking out. it's too bad they didn't put out a second album together.

god, i love this track. that just blaze beat is so great, and sai flows effortlessly over it. one of the reasons there was so much potential behind saigon's major label debut was that just blaze was heading production. even though the album was killed and watered down by label issues, this track is an example of the potential the album and sai's career had, before they were both ended by politics.

not sure if this one really counts. it didn't make ready to die, because it wasn't made for that. instead, it was made for a 1993 soundtrack. so it did make the album, i guess, lol. just not biggie's album. just like how dre's deep cover was made for a film soundtrack, rather than for the chronic.

my hope is that wicked (or someone else with a knowledge of non-album tracks) comes into this thread, and adds a tonne of shit i've never heard before. i never would have heard those beatnuts tracks, were it not for him hooking me up with them.

this is allegedly supposed to be on muddy waters 2, but it came out in 2014. it's been out for so long, i bet red will leave it off the album. red goes in on this track. damn, this track is great.

if i remember correctly, this actually did make the album, but it was only on there as a hidden track. it's real weird to put your biggest single to date in as a hidden track. i wonder if it was left off the album, but added as a hidden track on later versions of the album. i'm not sure of the full story here. it's a weird one.

tone mason - the production duo - put out this single, but never put out an album. this shit was hella dope.

i think biz might have made this track specifically for the greatest hits album he put out shortly after, but maybe it was just a single that coincidentally came out a year before the greatest hits comp. i'm not sure. either way, it's dope, and it's not on any of his studio releases.

i understand that these are both real long, and that could possibly be a reason they didn't make it onto endtroducing, but you'd think these would be the first two tracks that'd make the cut for pre-emptive strike, since that album was basically a comp of pre-endtroducing singles, as well as tracks that didn't make endtroducing. particularly lost and found. that track is crazy fucking good. those drums slap.

this track didn't make the cut of reloaded, because of sample reasons, i'm assuming. the sample is from the movie, rocky ii. i don't see any other reason as to why it wouldn't have made the album. it's so good. smooth as fuck.

None of these are singles . A single is a song that the people that be put out as a hit to lead the way to the album. You're just putting out songs that aren't on the album. A single has to be a hit

This can be released for sale to the public in a variety of different formats. In most cases, a single is a song that is released separately from an album, although it usually also appears on an album. Typically, these are the songs from albums that are released separately for promotional uses such as digital download or commercial radio airplay and are expected to be the most popular. In other cases a recording released as a single may not appear on an album.

As digital downloading and audio streaming have become more prevalent, it is often possible for every track on an album to also be available separately. Nevertheless, the concept of a single for an album has been retained as an identification of a more heavily promoted or more popular song (or group of songs) within an album collection."
