7 songs were recorded in 7 days one hot summer in a swampcooled house in the middle of Apple Valley,CA. At the time each member were going through their own struggle but somehow the universe brought them together to for one week to record some heat.

After some time there was loss of contact from when the sessions were recorded, but the universe worked it out once more.

Clutchy Hopkins-the question remains.who is he? Dj Shadow? Madlib? The proof still is that he's a highly talented multi instrumentalist and that it doesnt really matter who he is,but that the music is dope.

The Red Spiders- known to be Owen Lipscomb (percussionist) and Estin Lipscomb, featured guitarist on the previous Clutchy Hopkins album High Desert Low Tide with Fat Albert Einstein.

JVISION-known to make fantastic boom bap beats on the MPC. Little do people know,he's an awesome percussionist and can play various instruments as well which is all featured on this album

E.SC- aka Pryvet Peepsho, highly respected DJ/turntablist that comes from a super rare breed of ambidextrous cutters on a world class level. No records or turntables were harmed on this project though. His participation was performing with percussion, keys and sound manipulation

whoa. heard the name before but never checked them out and this is really dope. professional musicians making beats or beat like songs that dont sound far removed from the raw sample based sound. nice.

good stuff, i already forgot that he dropped an album earlier this year lol. i need to go back and listen to that again.

do you guys think he'll ever reveal who he is? have there been any other musicians that have kept their true identity a secret for as long as this dude has? i can't think of any.

we'll never know. and that's fine. he's pretty obscure now. i mean, i listen to clutchy on a weekly basis, and this second release of the year flew under my radar for months (it came out in august). i don't think enough people know about him in 2017 (unfortunately) for it to matter who he is. it was an early gimmick that was cool, but now it's kind of incidental, imo. i mean, the mythology's always in the back of my mind when i'm listening to him, but the quality of the music always supersedes all those thoughts.

now that i think about it, he has actually kind of dropped some of his mystique. his album releases used to come with fictional press release stories. but now they're straightforward about the recording. with this new release, for example, it just says they recorded it over a week in cali. compare that to the press release description of where the album, walking backwards, came from:

We first became interested in releasing new tunes by Hopkins when we discovered reel-to-reel tapes, marked "C.H.", at the Bargain Town Thrift Store in the Mojave Desert. A chance encounter with a woman who claimed to have once owned the tapes led us to The Misled Children, supposed messengers of Hopkins. This long-haired, note scribbling, double talking duo came by the Ubiquity office and, after drinking our fridge dry, made a deal to deliver an album's worth of Hopkins tunes. They gave us two tracks and then, over the course of a year, sent a dead pigeon, a half-empty jigsaw puzzle, and a purple v-neck sweater. No album appeared in the post. Eventually, a napkin from Mama C's Restaurant arrived in an envelope. On it was written "Go see Johnny Brooklyn at Valentino's Pizza Place; he has your music, creep." At the back table, Mr. Brooklyn was waiting, album master in hand. We never heard from the Misled Children again, although we've been told they've been sending rude notes to Shawn Lee.

seems most likely to be a madlib related thing to me, with all his experience with similar style projects. even the name- i can see madlib using and his history of releasing stuff on the low and/or under different names. im sure many think the same but dosnt mean were right.

it can't be madlib. the timeline doesn't add up and the style is way too different from the instrumentation madlib's done with his YNQ releases. i don't think clutchy's anyone we know. trust me, i've thought about it a lot, lol.

however, if it is anyone we know, it's the beastie boys. i don't believe this to be true at all, but their album, the in sounds from way out, has similar moments to what clutchy does. and their timeline adds up, because they've been so quiet as beastie boys during the years clutchy has been active. but, again, i don't think it's them, or anyone we know.

paranoid conspiracy theorist note: In June 2014, Mike D stated that neither he nor Horovitz would ever perform under the name the Beastie Boys again out of respect for Yauch.

for real though, it's not them.

clutchy's style seems too specific, and, tbh, advanced - in terms of live instrumentation work - to be anyone familiar from the hip hop community. if it's anyone familiar, it's shawn lee, who has collaborated with clutchy on three albums. however, i believe it's just some artist that doesn't perform under any other name, and prefers to be completely unknown, but is also clever enough to know that hinting he might be someone familiar would sell albums. i mean, it's the reason i started listening.

DH3, you have my interest. but i can't find any body with the "sean" name, when i google ubiquity. i find shawn lee. is that who you're referring to, or is there someone else that i'm just too much of a n00b to find right now?

this is shawn lee, btw. he's made two albums with clutchy, and has work on a few tracks on clutchy's other albums. if anyone, i believe it's this guy. however, i also am more convinced that clutchy is a unique artist, rather than an alias. although clutchy's closely associated with shawn lee, there are some big differences in sound and style between the two of them, making me think that they're two different artists. for all we know, clutchy is a whole band, rather than one multi-instrumentalist artist, like shawn lee.

Yup that's the dude im talking bout.

I know they have collabed but even on theie individual albums where they dont collab - they sound very similar.

Idk if it takes a certain maybe more musical to hear what the music is actually doing or sounding like.... but it sounds beyond similar to me.

Im basically convinced.

Also, consider Shawn Lee is on the while alias vibe

Iím turned off by secret artists, idky.

Never heard one song from any of them.

Hardline stance on the whole gimmick artist.

I have a theory that itís Money Mark, keyboardist for Beastie Boys and a key contributer to everything instrumental that the Beasties have dropped with a similar sound as Clutch. Iíd put money on it.
