not avaible yet but bandcamp says it will be released today. i loved thumbs and perfect hair, so i'm expecting this to be great as well. busdriver is one of these rare cases of an artist putting out some of their best material in their late 30s/early 40s.

Drawing from memory and community roots, the 10th album from rap innovator BUSDRIVER plays out like an ode to modern folk art via the act’s characteristically warped take on the world’s leading pop music: hiphop. Homespun and bursting with intention, “electricity is on our side” argues that the quintessential underground hiphop album is in fact the high art of the day.// Electronic musics, jazz, hiphop and writing are once again minced into a unique configuration(underground social music) to achieve the aesthetic ends and messaging harnessed by the legendary BUSDRIVER.

1. electricity is on our side
2. Im from a different time
3. Grape Drank (feat. Denmark Vessey)
4. the saboteur’s mirror
5. losing you again
6. the year I became a mutherfuckin’ G (feat. Dntel and Lorde Fredd33)

11. Right before the Miracle (feat. the Underground Railroad)
12. this is my art and it is dangerous
13. to top the divorcees list of baroness Nica
14. several friends
15. tiny infinities (feat. Hemiock Ernst)
16. improvisers anthem
17. be-grizzled_auteur_mythos take_3
18.Gene Anthony (feat. Fumitake Tamura)
19. exploding slowly (feat. Daedelus)

and i'm not saying "nah" to imply that the allegations against him were completely untrue from the standpoint of the victim

but maybe you should at least hear his side of the story before you go around calling people rapists.

i don't know, bandcamp says right there: "digital album releases June 1, 2018"

so hopefully that means it'll be available in a few hours and that this isn't some placeholder date.

He comes off as an arrogant tone deaf fuckboy in that statement. Kinda reminds me of the Ducktails situation. So eager for it to just go away already so he can release new music.

How did I not know about this? Driver is one of my favorite live he's ridiculously dope in person.

Man dudes catching way too much flak for that accusation. He acted exactly how any other dude in the situation would. Woman let's you in her bed and you don't make a move you probably like dudes.

Tippi. Perfect hair or thumbs?

5th point - man that's tough, i really dig both of them and think they're two of drivers best projects to date. i think perfect hair might be a little bit stronger of an album front to back, but i thumbs is stronger just by looking at the songs. plus it's just darker and more explosive to me, and i think all the features knocked it out of the park and add a lot to the album

hottentot supercluster
much
ministry of the torture couch
worlds to run
shadows and victories
species of property
two feet in the layer cake

i think all of these are great. i also love the way black labor and great spooks of enormous strength warp and change shape, the way black labor builds in particular is insane to me. probably my favorite track on the whole album.

do you have a preference?

Thumbs is a little better to me. But I like them both. Crazy cause I think thumbs was just a mixtape but he was definitely in his zone while recording that it's my favorite project from him. Have you seen him live? Dude just doesn't run out of breath plus he does some cool djing shit while he raps it's dope to watch. Plus he butchered some dudes hair while aes was doing "racing stripes". Probably the funest show I've been to the crowd interaction was awesome. It was at the armory in Ashland oregon. Tiny little venue. But aes, driver, big wiz, and Rob sonic all came and chilled with the 20 or so of us that stuck around. They all seemed hella cool

^^How is it rape if he didn't have sex with her? She invited him to her bed and he took his pants off big deal.

The Aesop thing is strange though but I doubt we'll ever hear what that's all about

idk man don't like throwing around terms like that even as a joke. we really don't know anything about the aesop rock situation other than some vague tweets, and what busdriver is describing sounds more like a miscommunication than rape. if driver can provide screenshots of any of those text messages he mentions in his statement i'd really be inclined to believe him. it seemed like a pretty earnest recollection of those events. you never know though.

people and especially pissed off chicks can make up shit and i've seen it happen. my friend was accused by this 1 chick and then they became friends again a few years later and she admitted previously that she had made it all up cause she was hurt and mad. and then she accused him again! lol. she was making it up cause her feelings were hurt because he just wanted to be friends with benefits.

there are some sick people out there so i need evidence before i believe these hearsay b.s. allegations.

yeah it doesn't seem like it'll be out for a while, maybe next week.

haven't decided if i'm going to get the vinyl yet. the completionist in me is telling me to though since i own everything else he's released on vinyl. if the vinyl is half the album that's still 11 tracks. might just do it to support one of my favorite artists.

finally had the chance to sit down and listen to this 80 minute behemoth of an album from beginning to end, and while there's way too much to really unpack here after one single listen i'll say this right now - this could potentially be driver's opus. he could stop making music now, and this would be a great note to go out on. everything is here, you've got the super experimental tracks, the straightforward rap stuff, tracks where he's actually rapping over jazz music, some where's mainly singing. i love the way some of these tracks evolve and progress over time. it doesn't sound like any album he's ever put out, but at the same time it encompasses all of these different elements and ideas he's implemented in the past across his vast discography. yeah, it's very long but as of right now, based on an initial listen, there are no tracks that really felt like filler or that they shouldn't be here. maybe "losing you again" would be the one. but not really anything here that made me question whether it was necessary for the album to be this long. i was never bored at any point or found myself wishing that the album would end. of course that could change, a few might seem weaker on my next listen. definitely a great album though with a lot of personality

immediate standouts to me:

the saboteur's mirror
the year i became a mutherfuckin' g
me vs. me
kiss around the note
right before the miracle
to top the divorcees list of baroness nica
tiny infinities (hemlock erst fucking killed it)
improviser's anthem
exploding slowly
FUKN

Loewi if you like bus driver you'll love this.

Tippi, don't say he can stop making music man! That'd be a shame, just looking at his run from perfect hair to this album the progression is amazing I couldn't agree more with you about him and aes getting better later in their careers. Plus I NEED him and zavala to do at least an ep together before he quits.

Kiss around the note is insane. The whole album really is insane.

I feel like he doesn't get enough props lyrically. Maybe it gets lost in his delivery. This may be one of his best projects yet. I got this tied with thumbs, but it's a matter of subjectivity. I would prefer one over the other just based on how I'm feeling. I was really hoping for a Milo feature but oh well.

One of my top albums this year for sure. Just need to hear that ceschi and factor joint dropping in september

man, you know i didnt mean that i wanted busdriver to stop making music after this lol. i'm just saying it would be a fine note to go out on. this is everything i could have possibly wanted out of a busdriver album, i can't see this not being top 1 or 2 at the end of this year.

after a few more listens i still agree with everything i said in my previous comment, but add sore spot to the short list of weaker tracks.

i also realize that i named about half the album before as standouts, but i really had to narrow it down my four favorites on here would be:

the saboteurs mirror
kiss around the note (might be my favorite song of the year)
improvers anthem
tiny infinities.

as for why milo wasn't featured on here, i don't think he and driver are on speaking terms. they don't even follow each other on twitter. whether this has anything to do with the accusations i'm not sure, but i recall milo being asked about it recently and he said he's not really sure what driver has been up to and they haven't spoken in about a year.

i love driver but prefer his first few albums that had dope , hard beats. temporary forever is his best album imo. i dont want rapping over a jazz song, live band shit or overly abstract , awkward sounding shit that barely sounds like rap. sounds like he's losing his damn mind.

lol, "overly abstract" and "losing his damn mind". come on man, you think most people wouldn't say the same exact thing about aleph? you can see the irony in this, right? i don't think this new album is overly abstract or awkward sounding at all tbh. it's forward thinking and original, like the rest of driver's projects have been.

this is the evolution of what driver was doing on temporary forever, whether you find that to be for better or for worse. you can't expect him to just keep making the same album forever, and just because an artist steps outside the box or whatever your perceived confines of the genre are doesn't necessarily mean they're losing their mind. i think the dude knows exactly what he's doing.

it's perfectly understandable if you just don't like the way it sounds or if it's not exactly what you wanted from busdriver, i get that, but i'd expect a dude who is always praising albums for being groundbreaking, original, next level, creative, etc would at least be able to appreciate this and respect what he's doing

This is a solid listen, but overall I think it's in the bottom half, maybe somewhere between Jhelli and Cosmic, of Busdriver's top notch discography. I give it a 3/5 right now.

I get what Bus was trying to do with this project - a personal and expansive retrospective of sorts. There are certainly great songs, "the year I became" and "Fukn" are two of his best songs period. Even so, there is a fair amount of filler on this imo. Some of the beats fail to fit with either Driver's jazzy mode or electronic mode. Delivery wise, Driver appears to adopt some more contemporary flows at times - some of which work and others which don't. Lyrically, there's lots of good stuff on here. I almost compare it to Nocando's "Severed" at times insofar as Driver seems to have multiple historical bones to pick - his exes, his contemporaries, Hellfyre Club. Again, sometimes this works and other times it sounds kinda corny. As a celebratory 10th album however, it's pretty darn good.

Speaking of this being his 10th album, I wonder which ones he's counting as his previous 9. I would assume he's definitely counting Memoirs; Temporary; Cosmic; Fear; RoadKill; Jhelli; Beaus; and Perfect Hair. What he counts as the 9th is unclear to me though. There's three possibilities I can think of. First is "Thumbs." It's original beats, long, and recent. He did go on a campaign of calling it a "mixtape" though and I doubt he's counting Computer Cooties. He may alternatively be counting "Arguments with Dreams." A while back on IG, Bus was doing short retrospectives on some of his projects and he included the 8 above albums and "Arguments." It is pretty short though (7 songs) and he initially called it an "EP." Then again, 7 song albums are all the rage today. The other possibility is "This Machine Kills Fashion Tips." This has exclusive tracks and Driver toured on it. It is also, however, a compilation of tracks spanning various years and was generally only available on tour.

As for milo, he's definitely distancing himself from Bus. Aside from his comments while on his Europe tour (about how he's not with what Bus did) and his website (noting how he wasn't accused of anything as bad as Bus was,) a while back on twitter he listed his Top 5 and Bus wasn't on it anymore. Someone asked him where Bus and Kool AD were (not sure why they asked about Kool AD lol) and he responded something like "Yeah, where are they?!?"

trylemma - you made some good points and i think your assessment was fair. i respect your opinion because, while you seem to approach albums with an open mind, you seem to have a good idea of what you do/don't like and can express your own problems with an album while still acknowledging it's quality.

i've probably listened to this album 6 or 7 time straight though, and a few other tracks many more times than that. it's definitely my AOTY so far. i can understand why as a whole it might not work for a lot of people, but it definitely did for me. it's almost like he's playing the part of a jazz vocalist in his own band, especially with the way that he plays around with his delivery/vocal styles and singing. this album's got so much energy, character, and personality, and even though it's 80 minutes long i'm still impressed by how much driver managed to pack in here. i honestly didn't think he would ever put out a better album than perfect hair or thumbs, i'm glad i was wrong.
