A top 5 year for rap ever. ground breaking year and an under rated one! the quality here blows any post '94 year out of the water and any pre '89 year too. A solid and maybe impossible to beat case can be made that the best albums from EPMD, Icecube, tribe, P.E., Brand nubian,Paris, kool G rap,Tragedy were released in 1990.

Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet
Ice Cube - AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted
A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm
Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - Wanted: Dead or Alive
Tragedy - Intelligent Hoodlum

that geto boys is a remix album with only 2 new tracks so not really a new album since most of the tracks were on Grip It from '89. not sure why it made the voting process.

and the gangstarr seems to be 1991.was printed as 1990 in 1990 but released jan.15, 1991. says almost every source online. just to get a rep 12" was 1990- album was '91. i warned about this early on.

fuck me those top 2 were a rough choice. In the end though that Tribe album is one of my top 15 ever I think, absolutely flawless record front to back. Cube right being it though. Touch, tough choice.

Here's a question- how did the verbal styles suddenly shift- and so quickly? For instance Gza still has an old school flow on Words from the Genius, but all a sudden on 36 Chambers he sounds like a 21st century rapper (or a rapper after about '92). You see it all throughout 90-92, there's still artist with the old school type flow- and suddenly there's a shift somehow in there to a smoother, tighter sounding rap.

at mic data- many emcees started to not want to sound "old school" or too happy or corny etc.(wrongly so in some cases) so thats part of it and the street/crime rap was getting really big starting in '92 which made many not want to sound soft. also rappers realized that image and a harder/darker sound could sell more.
