hell yeah gino, i'm surprised you liked it that much especially after the first listen. from a production standpoint i understand actually. took me 4 or 5 for it to REALLY click, and it's only grown on me with each listen since.

one thing i wanted to mention - earl touches so much on death & this concept of sand falling out the hourglass throughout the album. that's morbid enough on it's own, but learning that the album, aside from the last two songs, has been done since last year & was meant to help him reconcile with his father who passed away before getting the chance to hear it makes the whole thing even more haunting. almost like foreshadowing. originally would have ended with "playing possum", the track with audio of his mother speaking about earl & his family spliced in with earl's dad reading one of his poems. peanut & riot were both made after earl's father and uncle hugh masekela passed away. kind of adds a whole new context to things.

also the lack of closure at the end of the album or the uncertainty reminds me of has-lo's "in case i don't make it" in a way.

Do you guys sit around and doodle little ranking lists of all this shit you listen to. Everybody always talking about top 5ís and 10ís and years and decades. Iíve never done this. This constant desire to rank things baffles me to be honest.

This constant desire and its manifestation in countless threads that are redundant as fuck is in fact the source of a large portion of my shit posting. Cause whenever I make a thread where I actually try to engage in a topic of discussion outside of that realm it falls flat. Itís like most people donít actually want to discuss the culture or philosophy of the music. They just want to do the most base thing which is say this is better than that.

yeah selah. it's fun and forces me to really thing about what i actually enjoy about the music, patterns in what i gravitate towards, what albums i've continued going back to, why i've gone back to them more than other projects. it's nice to see a visual reprsentation of how much an album grew on me, if that makes any sense. plus it's really satisfying to make a collage and see the artwork for all of these albums that i enjoyed side by side.

i think it's fun and also lists can be a helpful tool in putting other people who have a similar taste in music as you onto new music, in a format that's easily readable. i don't look at it as some objective measure of saying "this album is better than that album" at all. i do think it's discussed too much though, i can definitely agree with you there. a mid year list thread and an end of year one are really all that's needed.

Sorry I didnít mean to phrase the doodle thing shitty. That was rude 🤷;‍;♂;️;

Like the other day in a Drug Smokes thread about poster of the year mocking No Mask...Sultan was like well at least he contributes new music which is more than most around here. No disrespect to Sultan but if posting new music is the metric for contribution than again it just turns things into something so base.

selah that's how shit is on here though, you know that. if anyone really cares that much about poster of the year on a defunct forum they should consider getting their priorities in order lol. i know what you're saying though. i post paragraphs about albums i love that a lot of people on here ignore or shit on so naturally it makes me want to post less, because i could post my opinion somewhere else and actually engage in a discussion about it. iiwii i guess.

also regarding the lists, i guess the reason i participate outside of my own selfish reasons is that i've always found value in lists that other people have made & discovered new music i've enjoyed that way, so maybe it'll be the same for someone else.

Oh I wasnít saying anything like someone actually vying for a poster ranking like POTY. Iím just saying itís like ok well these posters suck or are easily dismissed cause they arenít posting every single album they find on the internet but this poster is important cause they post everything type of thing idk.

i find so much shit using lists.

even last night, i googled "best 70s thriller movies", and found a couple i hadn't seen and need to get to. like tippi said, getting too carried away with lists kind of becomes a black hole of sucking the fun out of the room, but there's def a lot of value to be had in lists, every once and a while. moderation in lists is the right way.

i'm just getting into them, to be real. looking at the general reviews of their albums on wikipedia, it seems like this was a bad place to start. on the other hand, that means my experience with earth, wig, and fire is only uphill from here.

EWF is weird in that their drums always sound cheap, light, and shitty. it's pretty unusual for a soul group - more specifically, a soul band - to seem to have such low emphasis on their drums in their instrumentation. go listen to their hit, september, right now, and you'll hear -- the drums are a total afterthought. it's odd to me and kind of dates their music a bit. *shrugs

^^^scene of the crime is a cool track off that. he kind of went western on this project, which is a neat angle to take. most hip hop steers clear of the western genre, because it's so closely associated with country music which is kind of the antithesis of hip hop in a way. so it's fun to hear a hip hop producer lean into western sounds.
