I always heard it was.

I never took to Jay originally but grew to love him.

Consecutive platinum records
His music aged well
Great wife

RD is all biz and money.

Jay won.

I believe he spits more "conscious" rap then "conscious" rap itself on RD.

Jay won 👍;

Felipe - o.k. Mafioso albums? I don't see that. I see Obfcl Wu Gambinos as mafia.

Jay has this hip hop mixed with pop rnb style that works.

I prefer his street biz work best.

Where I'm from is Jay Z perfection.

Felipe - putting AZ in there I guess your right.

I just think no one did mafia rap justice.

Maybe Nas on it was written or G Rap
Roots of Evil for sure.

Nas illmatic and it was written I feel are better rap albums than reasonable doubt.

However.

Jay won!

Overall and you can trace it to his mind set on reasonable doubt.

How old was he when he made it like 27?

im not discussing jay's age maturity or lack of it

if you hear an scarface movie intro about drug dealing and the whole album has moneymaking subject matter what do you think?

deep down you know its a mafioso album, is jay gangsta i dont know, nor do i care but this album is...at least in my eyes

jay isnt a traditional gangasta but the type he is makes alot more loot without the concern of getting locked up. hes a buisness man and the majority of his career he never even fucked with drugs as far as doing them. hes smart, beyond smart. no other rapper has 5 classics like jay. i dug ether better than nething jay thru nas way but its not even close jay-z kills nas in every other aspect except that "staged" battle.

Felipe - you are right it is a "mafioso" album - but again simply having a Scargace-esque intro doesn't make it one entirely. I guess youre right tho. Jay made it his own. Fredo really gave you the tesponse I would have if I'd known more about Jay

jay isnt a traditional gangasta but the type he is makes alot more loot without the concern of getting locked up. hes a buisness man and the majority of his career he never even fucked with drugs as far as doing them. hes smart, beyond smart. no other rapper has 5 classics like jay. i dug ether better than nething jay thru nas way but its not even close jay-z kills nas in every other aspect except that "staged" battle.

To add to that in Jay's book he talks about tripping out smoking a blunt with Big and telling him "never again"

He was about champagne and minimal in my eyes cause he had a line about quitting alcohol in 4:44.

There are songs on RD are true rap classics.

Dead Presidents 2
D'Evils
22 twos
Can I live
Ain't no ni$# at
Friend or foe
Coming of age - mad jewels in that one
Bring it on
Regrets

All those I consider classics.

His Business was correct - he proved it in real life.

Rolo - thats the thing. I love Jay - but I do feel Nas makes better music and Nas is good with money minus his divorce.

I like Jay for his big time beats.
But as soon as rnb comes in I don't like that.

Pharrel and Jay like Change clothes is cool.

Jay is the ONLY brag rapper in the history of rap that has a right to. Em is dogshit, kanye is even bigger dogshit and lol at drake and kendrick. Jay is the goat the camel and the whole sha-bang. Nas isnt near that list dude. And unfortunetely biggie did die and his life sacrifice was making jay the king.

However even tho I like illmatic more the content behind Jay's rhymes is more true to life.

Jay talks about working hard, enjoying life, making it out of poverty, being humble and low key. Not being played by men or women and money over fame.

There's a tonne of knowledge on that album and Jay is the example. It's real.

He samples Nas and P then had beef with them cause he actually loves them.

No disrespect but what did you guys think of the Big collab?

Its cool but the beat is kinda way different.

I respect that it happened but that beat to me could have been better.

Are the accapellas out? Any remixes?

My bad, the beat is what it is but dead Presidents is dope.

Rareform - well said 👍;

Wigga - I see what you mean. I wrote rap cuz it its all rap. Whats hip hop? Tribe called Quest?

Dead presidents 2 is very hip hop and not rap like melly melle.

Is RD considered hardcore?

I think he references Jason Vorhees and camp crystal which is cool.

Look at that compared to Flatlinerz who sold like 30,000 on their def jam debut and it was consudered a flop.
All horrorcore.

Jay was business. Its like he rhymed as an observer but also got in on the action. Talking about getting shot at.

Mac Miller overdosed at 26.
Jay Z released Readonable Doubt at 27 years old. Let that sink in.

No disrespect to Miller but if he didnt take drugs maybe he could have been greater than Jay. He had a way better head start and died with millions.

Crazy.

What do you (everyone in this post) consider Jay Z's top 5 albums?

From this question previously ppl said

In no order

1. Reasonable Doubt
2. Black Album
3. Vol 1
4. Vol 2
5. Blueprint

I don't know much of Jay other than that.

We can add American Gangster and Watch the Throne.

I thought Magna Carter was his best until I heard those top 5 listed.

I actually like Watch the Throne alot it's an incredible work.

Then I love that Brooklyn go hard, On to the next one, yo gon learn, and Swagger like us singles - LOVE them.

So far Its like I like a mix of those top 5 I listed. Not all of them straight through.

Again I never took to Jay until lile 2006 ish. Then I went through his work and was basking in it.

After all is said and done he may be the true g.o.a.t.

There is no g.o.a.t in reality. You cant compare Em or Krs One bit they are both g.o.a.ts.

However Jay is clearly the king of New York rap and he will be very difgicult to top!

Lpac - I don't agree with that! Neither Big nor Dame made Jay. Jay made Jay.

He took over from Biggie and led Brooklyn rap from there.

Whats fucked is that Jay and Big had a good relationship. You can tell. It was natural.

Also Biggie and Pac used to be cool.
Why the fuck they couldn't control themselves when things got heated is beyond me.

The biggest loss in hip hop to this date smh

Thats why when I see hip hoppers bully other hip hoppers online it makes me want to punch them in the face and break their jaws.

My bad. Ill calm down.

I wonder what Jay will do next?

Again what do you guys think of the Big and Jay collab? Its cool but I think it could have been better but it does fit Reasonable Doubt.

i love vol.3 and personally its higher than the 5th spot but ya knoooo. vol.3 had hits between "so ghetto" and "things that you do" those were played constantly on the radio and they were fucking great. aside from the awesome "s.carter" track the opener and closer "hova song" were god tier. and then he made "anything" around that time with the oliver sample as an answer to the annie shit from vol.2 but it ended up being a bonus joint on sigels debut instead. if he added that to vol.3 it woulda been over the top.
