Thoughts?

Chris Crack took the first few open bars of Graymatter's beat "Erthereum God" for his song "They Killed Dr. Sebi" off his new album.

Graymatter reached out and this was the reply from Chris Crack:

"...I just flipped your beat that was on a beat tape. If I was a nobody this wouldnt have even been an issue.

If u leave 4 bars at the beginning of a song and I loop it up and make a song out of it by altering it and hella adding to it, that makes it my shit. U act like I just rapped over ur shit which is not only out for free but costs ONE Dollar on bandcamp."

After Graymatter came out and tweeted:

"its funny cause when I originally told this weirdo not to use the beat MONTHS AGO, he very politely agreed. Mfer just tryna sound cool now lmao"

That is the cost to listen to the beat though, not to use it for your own song

These days there is no excuse. Producers & beat-makers gotta correct or don't come at all.

Get some type of agreement to terms to use other peoples music. With out it all explanations are hyperbole.

Premiers perspective at the end of the above track is still relevant.

This is interesting... If he reached out to Graymatter and he said it wasn't cool to use, then I think the hunt begins to try and find that loop before you do it yourself. If you do, shit is fair game. You don't own no loops, the only person with a legal leg to stand on would be the copyright owners of the original work and they could put out a cease and desist on both of the tracks.

I don't know if the portion that Crack looped has elements of Graymatter's added production in it. If so, that's kind of a wack jack move without the permission but again, when it comes to sampling, there are no clear rules.

If I was Graymatter and dude wanted to use an instrumental from a project I put out, I would simply clarify the credit I intend to receive (put my name on it and register it with me getting a 50% split). I mean I don't really think you can release instrumental music and expect that no one will ever wanna add vocals to it, but this is all about communication. I personally love it when dudes record vocals over the instrumental projects I've released.

At the same time, OG Big Kahuna and Fly Anakin from the MA camp put out an EP earlier this year where they are rhyming over Pun & DPs Rain and Sun skit off of Capital Punishment. To me that's a bit of a violation to add to something that you're selling. I still fuck with those dudes and their music tho.
