i feel like it's more diverse than ever, which i view as a good thing. of course there's all the "mumble rap" that most people dislike but there's also artists like tyler, brockhampton, vince staples, earl, kendrick, danny brown, rtj, isaiah rashad, injury reserve, denzel curry, droog, mick jenkins, no name, chance, rapsody, j.i.d, etc. i don't even care for j cole or logic really but at least their music has a message for the most part. i notice that there that artists are experimenting more and at least trying to do something different, and that's cool to me.

i guess mainstream wasn't the best term since you probably won't hear some of these artists on the radio, but they're some of the more well known artists out there right now. point is there are actually a decent number of popular rappers out there that i like, but 6 or 7 years ago that number was much lower.

i don't even know what is/isn't mainstream anymore, because i don't listen to the radio. i'm surprised to see isaiah rashad on tip's list. i had no idea he was that popular. i thought he was straight underground. that's pretty dope.

but i guess it speaks to what tip's saying, that i can't even tell anymore what is/isn't mainstream. the genre's bigger than ever, which means there's bound to be more diversity in sound, even in the mainstream realm.

he's got music videos with over 14 million views and his last album peaked at number 17 on the billboard 200, i definitely wouldn't consider him to be underground. especially since he's on TDE.

i agree with what you're saying though, it's harder to tell because there's less of a divide. or rather, there's multiple tiers now rather than an artist just being either underground or mainstream. i just think hip hop is in a good place right now overall.

it could also be the fact that the underground has expanded. there are a lot more sub genres now, rather than underground just being boom bap, or some variation of boom bap.

cool tippi

do you not think its gone full circle? Hip Hop in the 80's early 90's didn't really have a divide between mainstream into genres, it just had popular records be it Tone Loc or Slick Rick or DMC....there was no divide

and, honestly - to tie it back to the thread topic - i think a lot of this comes from kanye and mf doom's influence on the genre, as rappers. eminem was shitting on himself in mainstream songs before kanye was, but kanye was the first black rapper at his level to openly discuss his own vulnerabilities, in a way that was applauded by the mass audience. he rapped (on his first album) about everyman problems, and those songs were huge hits. nowadays, every rapper talks about stuff that rappers from a couple decades ago would dismiss as soft.

and doom brought in acceptance and the popularization of nerdy behaviour. nowadays, every rapper talks about stuff that rappers from a couple decades ago would dismiss as corny.

but, even though these guys made the genre "softer" and "cornier", it's not in a negative way, even though those terms are negative ones.

in a way yeah, but there are still plenty of mainstream fans who will dismiss lesser known artists or say they're not good just because they haven't heard of them. i don't know whether or not that happened in the early 90's. either way i feel that it's a big step forward from mainstream rap in the mid 2000's

i was gonna make this thread next weekend but ill just drop some good ones here.
1.logic is prolly the biggest dork rap music has ever seen, even bieber is cooler than him.

2.pete rock is the most overrated rap producer in hip hop history

3. elzhi, ka, and black thought are the most overrated rappers on this site.

4. i dont really care for alchemist old or new style.

5. i still really like action bronson and vinnie paz

6. mac miller amd mgk take a 2nd place tie is the biggest rap dickhead contest. they make riff raff and stitches look like rakim and kane.

7. knxledge is the most overrated current producer.

8. tyler the creater if serious could drop a classic.

9. observe>>>>>mach hommy

10. even with gunn taking a back seat hes the only thing that gonna keep the shady deal alive cuz conway and especially benny cant carry the ball.

11. jay z>>>>>>eminem

12. pun/bigl>>>>pac/biggie

13. el-p is still the biggest white faggot in the underground but without him killer mike would be taking orders at wafflehouse in east atlanta as i type this.

14. i kinda see the appeal with french montana

15. cardi b maybe 5 yrs ago would look like a good jerk off dream but now wen i see her and hear her voice i think rosie perez pt. 2

This is what i said in one of these threads back in 2012...

Don't see the hype with Reks at all. Grey Hairs is an average album.

Almost all southern emcees are unlistenable.

Life After Death is a 6.5/10 album. Too much filler bullshit.

I'd rather listen to Wu-Tang Forever then 36 Chambers.

36 Chambers was a classic, more important, and had more of an impact on the genre but the quality of lyrics, production, and emceeing on Forever were better.

Common has put out more shitty albums then good ones.

Everything Snoop Lion has released since Doggystyle has been garbage.
