Haven't seen him live since 1987 Def Jam tour.

Follow The Leader is such a ridiculously dope album. Every time I play it I think "damn this shit is so fucking good!" Damn near 30 years later...love it!

Couple of my fav tracks...

bring his lyrics with you to the show since he won't recite them on 50% of every song

i saw him at the art of rap a couple years ago, and it was a pretty underwhelming performance. big daddy kane stole the show that night.

i recently realized why i've always had a problem with follow the leader. just like pete rock and cl smooth's main ingredient, i wanted to like these albums more than i actually did. for both, i realized that the reason is that the songs are all so long. most songs on follow the leader are 4 to 5 minutes long. even though they're all great, i get tired of it. i'm not trying to knock the album here, just sharing my realization on why i could never like it as much as i wanted to.

at 88: I get it. I don't mind longer songs, actually rather prefer them, especially when the music and lyrics or vocals are dope. I'm a big reggae head, and love the 6-8 min extended versions where they do the regular song the dub out an additional 2-3 mins.

My boy saw Rakim last night in Souther California and said he was solid. He's playing a chill, small venue with fantastic sound tonight so we'll see.

a 5 minute rap song is a lifetime, i agree. thers been maybe 4-5 6 plus min rap songs ive ever super fucked with. u wanted to like em more 88 cuz ur "supposed to" fuck that, most of the universal classic from the late 80s and especially the 90s suck, sound dated and are super boring.

Show was good. Glad I went. Rakim was smooth and on point. DJ Scratch was solid. Venue has incredible sound and is a small & intimate setting. House was packed, crowd was chill.

Having said that, the opening act ended around 9:30, and RA didn't hit the stage until near midnight and finished his set (which included a 15 min set by Scratch) a little after 1am. Kind of weak in terms of set length.

nah, i like the beats on the album, and rakim is in his prime here. i want to like it more because the music is genuinely good, imo. has nothing to do with its classic status. same with main ingredient. pete, cl, and rakim are all in their primes on these albums. the songs are just too long on average, so they get a it redundant after a while, that's all. i don't mind a long song here or there, but every song can't be 4-5min long. hip hop beats that have vocals over them don't change up enough for that to work, and this album and main ingredient are both prime examples of that. if a song's going to be 4min or longer, there's got to be a valid reason (ie it's a posse cut, there's a beat change, etc.), but for every song to be 4min or more? nah. i ain't fucking with that.
