the realness aint the best album from 2001. just saying that now.

a lot of actual underground, superior albums getting overlooked.

you just said it's a great album, but said it would be ridiculous if it was in the top 5....

that's certainly fuckin confusing.

I don't think it would be ridiculous whatsoever....that album is excellent. it's definitely superior to stillmatic.

Wondering if it's just me, but I feel like I rank some of these albums higher than others that are probably a better overall album because I was listening to them in high school and they have a strong nostalgic feeling. For example, the Reks and Dilated albums are probably not better albums than The Blueprint, but I didn't get into Jay-Z until college so I wasn't listening to him much in high school. I was into way more underground shit in high school.

Also, not sure if it was the same for anyone else, but I remember when The Best Part dropped that was HUGE. I remember a bunch of songs that were on The Best Part were floating around on Napster & LimeWire a year or two before the album dropped. It seems like it took forever for the full album to drop and when it did I was hyped because I had downloaded so many of the songs.

no you're right, i've changed my lists a couple times based off that fact. (eyedea first born got a pass cuz i had no eyedea back then how dope he was and that album is real special to me in the last 5 years)

the ace might not be better than blueprint or canox, but it is to me cuz thats what i was bumpin hard back then so yep it's the nostalgia plus, it still plays good, aged very well imo. mad great choices in this year.

cormega proved he was a force to be reckoned with in 01 with the realness. is it a perfect album? not really, but man it was hard back then and got a lot of spins. same with the tragedy khadafi against all odds, that shoulda made final round and virtuoso but oh well.

^eyedea album shits on all the other albums from 2001. he out raps everybody that dropped albums that year. more next level, creative, natural and lyrical then any of them. more mature too and he was only 16 when he wrote some of it. beats are crazy on point too.people sleepin.

This is easily the most difficult decision compared to the other 3 years we've done. Whereas in the other years there were only about 5-7 standouts in the finals, my Top 12 could probably be interchangeable to a certain extent.

1. Cormega - The Realness
2. Smut Peddlers - Porn Again
3. Rza - Digital Bullet
4. Masta Ace – Disposable Arts
5. Chino XL - I Told You So

I agree about nostalgia playing a part in my decision making for sure. But this is what our favorite albums are out of the ones nominated. Not so much what the perceived best albums are. Id say out of the 22 listed i probably copped 9 or 10 of them the day they dropped in 2001. The Mega is a personal classic for me. Such a dope album i can still play front to back to this day. Thun and Kicko is one of the hardest tracks of all time.
