Somehow it has dystopian vibe to it.

And compared to other underground shit from the time... it has its own underground vibe to it

Got the CD but the digital version has 4 bonus tracks. Silver hawks being one of those and probably my favorite joint on the album.

Huge fan of CO, got "Blade Of The Ronin" CD, this one was one the best of 2015 and more than a worthy follower of "Cold Vein" in my opinion...Cosmiq did a superb job!

Also new Vast Aire "AIREPLANE" album should drop any moment, assuming January 2018, completely produced by Cosmiq...

First single "Dark Metropolis"

And no news on possible new CO record...

Clock, gino, I'll fist-fight both of you on sight if I ever catch you speaking negatively about the GOAT album ever again.

Blade of the Ronin didn't do a lot for me. I really enjoyed it when it dropped, mainly I think because I was so happy the production didn't suck, but Vast is such a bad rapper. The dude has to be one of the worst fall-offs ever. Every damn line he spits is cornball.

Vodrul is actually my favorite member. I really dig his style and his solo albums shit on Vast. Plus his verse on Metal Gear is fucking bonkers.

blade of the ronin was really solid, better than i expected it to be for sure. i think i enjoyed it more than most people seemd to at the time it was released, but it's not touching the cold vein. the cold vein is one of my favorite hip hop albums ever, i always associate it with illmatic because both of those albums feel so much like NYC to me. i close my eyes while listening to either those albums and i'm there. the cold vein perfectly capures that paranoia/uneasieness of the city post 9/11, but it was released only months before the towers were attacked. it was almost like they predicted this dystopian post apocalyptic new york, even on the album cover it looks like ash is raining down on the city. i think it was was released at the perfect time and a lot of people really connected with it.

blade of the ronin didn't capture that magic again, but i never could have expected it to. bill cosmiq's production is good but doesn't create nearly as strong or as engaging of an atmosphere as el-p did on the cold vein, and to me vast & vordul didn't have nearly as much chemistry/synergy as they did on the cold vein. i almost don't think vordul was on it enough. i do think blade of the ronin was a worthy follow up though, considering since this was damn near 15 years after their last album.

what vast lacks with failed punchlines and a bit of cheese he makes up for with his voice, unique style and his effective, creative lines. he's average until you factor in the uniqueness and originality and the voice etc. white kids call him neato!

Like ETW, I've tried numerous times over the course of years to try to get into Cold Vein and while it's not terrible by any means, there's nothing special about it to me. I also find El-P to be one of the more overrated UGHH producers as well so take that for what its worth.

In terms of underground albums from the same era, id easily take VBD, Overcast!, and I Need Drugs over it with ease.

i always questioned the def jux fans from around that time. even tho aotp is kinda a parody now, they were so much better and stoupe makes better beats than el-p does.

Gotta disagree gino. DefJux was crushing AOTP shit back in the day. Jux had an incredible run of albums back then.

Fantastic Damage
Cold Vein
I Phantom
Labor Days
The End of the Beginning
Dead Ringer
Hell's Winter
I'll Sleep When You're Dead

That label had such a legendary run. Nothing anybody in AOTP did outside of VBD obviously is anywhere near the level of any one of those projects.

As for Stoupe vs El, I would rank them about even. I'm not even mad at that. Stoupe is a goddamned genius, I consider El to be one too. Just very different styles and sounds but both are masters in my eyes.

Cold Vein is great. Some days I think it is a classic and some days I'm with Texas Underground, it's just solid to me. I've said it before, listen to it at night it brings it to a whole other level. Also honestly when I'm depressed and I listen to the album it's the perfect mood music. This track in particular -

all the early apathy, celph, reef, and eso/7l stuff even excluding the jedi albums shits on def jux. thers a time and place for def jux artists and i love mr. lif but maybe im just a pissy guy, i can always play an angry wigger jam from back then.

ill take the 99-05 aotp roster over def jux ne day.

you can still hear the brilliance in retrospect, but not to sound like an elitist, but i'm a firm believer in you had to have been there when certain albums dropped, to pit it against it's peers and grasp the vibe and impact it had at that moment ....but what do i know.
