Seen Clock and a few other people mention their love and/or revisiting this one after it was brought up in the AOTY thread. Thought if any album out there deserved a revisiting thread it's this one.

Personally, I consider this to be a classic record. Especially after revisiting it and see how well it's held up. I never really would have made the connection back in the day without already having heard them work together, but really Muggs is the next logical choice to produce a project for the Genius after RZA. They mesh so well together. Muggs cinematic, blunted landscapes and GZA's monotone, precise storytelling are perfectly paired.

Not a weak track, beat or hook to be found. Every song serves its purpose both as a whole to the project and as just being dope individual songs. "All in Together Now" is one of my personal favorites. I remember reading an interview where GZA talked about how he had originally written that song for ODB to rap because he felt like the ghostwriters he had over at the Roc didn't really get his style. Crazy to think about how that would have sounded coming from Dirty in the first person.

The chess concept is dope too, and I enjoy that it's not forced down our throats in every lyric. It's just kinda there, in the background of the skits and a few verses, trying everything together. Lastly, one of the GOAT album covers. Wish I had a poster of this shit, I would frame that bitch and have it on my wall.

Anyways, Thoughts? Favorite or least favorite tracks? Where does it rank in GZA's discog for you?

Dope post and dope album.

For me itís the 2nd best GZA album after Liquid Swords. Liquid Swords and Grandmasters are the only two GZA albums with a fully coherent sound from start to finish. You can tell that both albums were crafted by two of the best to ever do it. In fact, RZA and Muggs are my top 2 GOAT producers.

Only track on her I sometimes skip is Queens Gambit. Itís a bit too mellow compared to the rest of the album.

The last 3 tracks are my favourites, especially Illusory Protection. That shit would have fit right in on Liquid Swords.

Album cover is dope too. I got my Grandmasters CD cover signed by GZA after a show a few years back.

I agree about this being Gza's second best album. I really fuck with Beneath The Surface but part of is nostalgia as there are some auto skips on there.

I remember when this first dropped thinking it was good, not great. But in retrospect over the years it's grown on me a lot. His wordplay on Queen's Gambit with naming all the NFL teams is DAFFY. That beat on Advance Pawns is some about to do battle in a mystical forest with a sword type of shit. Sample game on point throughout. Such a dope album. Nice to see the 2005 AOTY thingy having heads revisit this album cause, as i said in that thread, i don't remember too many thinking highly of it on here in the past.

This album was a letdown for me when it came out.

The song with RZA and GZA on Soul Assassins was so dope i thought maybe they were gonna come like that but they didnt.

That is complete bullshit.

If you take a look at the Muggs/Asia album cover, then I guess that isnít a Vs album either huh? DJ Muggs & Planet Asia. No mention of Vs anywhere on the cover or singles artwork.

To say that any of these albums are not part of Muggsí Vs series just because it says Muggs AND... is fuckin ridiculous. *shrugs*

I was under the impression any album Muggs did with an emcee in the "one emcee/one producer" format is automatically a "Vs" album, the Meyhem one included.

Regardless this is the best one and it's not even close for me. The PA and Sick Jacken ones are tied for a distant second.

They're all Vs / related albums.

This album was hit and miss for me. I havn't checked for it in over 5+ years. Might have to blow the duct off it and give it a spin.

I haven't listened to this album in a long time....I remember not liking it that much, but i'll have to give it another listen.

I also remember being into the remixed version a bit more.

The remixed version was an odd duck to me. I listened to it and enjoyed it, but at the same time I just didn't get it. Why remix this? It honestly didn't need it and the new mixes didn't add or improve anything in my opinion. They were all solid, but it just seemed kinda pointless to remix an album with already good, coherent production.

yea sorta like the percee p rmx album i never checked this albums rmx project, either. but as a producer i've done this to one of my albums (life is art) and it did sound like a different fresh take. although i enjoy the og version just as much, i think putting a "different spin" on it is possibly why they do it sometime, maybe?

If the Grandmasters Remix album was more like the Percee P one or the Madvillainy one, as in it was fully remixed by Muggs, then it might have been more interesting. But as it is, it was mainly a lot of no name producers, apart from Khalil and one or two others.

Muggs should have remixed it, or he coulda got Alchemist to remix it.

It did come with a DVD that had some dope footage of the Grandmasters tour though.
