Freddie Gibbs - Piņata

Alot has been said about this collaboration between Freddie Gibbs and Madlib. Made a thread about it not all that long ago. Gangsta rapper VS hip hop record crate fanatic. Is it gonna work? Fuck yeah it's gonna work.

This is one of the freshest records in years even though the loops are old and funky. Gibbs get to work early on and never lets up. This shit stayed stuck in rotation for tons of underground hip hop fans and received critical acclaim in basically every review from any credible hip hop source. Bring on part 2 God damn it!

Albums a 6.5/10. Once Bomb starts this album really fucking takes off. Beat on that track is so ill. Other stand outs for me from that point on are...

Shitsville - Beat was tailor made for Gibbs' style of spitting
Real - He pwned Jeezy on that track and the beat switch is so dope
Thuggin - One of my favorite tracks of 2011 so naturally one of, if not the best track on here
Robes - Nice, smooth, laid back shit. Love that sample. Not gonna front, I actually dig Domo. Most heads on here sweat Earl from that overrated crew but to me Domo is the only dude worth a shit.
Broken - Gibbs and Face over a chilled Madlib beat, nuff said.

Lakers, Knicks, and Uno are also dope but not on the level as the above tracks. Not feeling Shame and while Piņata is a sick beat (even though its very similar to that 'Biggie' beat with a couple different, minor intricacies) the emcee line up is underwhelming to say the least. Wac Miller with one of the worst guest verses of all time.

Madlib's sequencing from track to track is top shelf but a little too much filler and a few weaker beats with some horrible guest verses sprinkled in knocked it down a few pegs.

1000% Agree!

If you take all of their EP's before the album dropped, and add those tracks that aren't already on the album, it's a masterpiece. Hope they slow play this next release with EP's.

Clock I saw your review in my Gibbs thread a lil bit ago. You're not feeling how the album opens up? Everything up until Bomb is some of the strongest work on the album.

Blood Gushin' I think I hear Sirens!

Scarface is the same sample from Droog's GKAC. Noticed that instantly when i heard Packs.

It's just so dope how Mablib hacked it up and still found that rhythm and Gibbs just came perfect on it.

not bein a prick buck but madlib didnt come through. most beats are way too repetitive and lacking illness for madlib and gibbs aint great.

very over rated album. its good.

You just gotta drop the whole "produced by Madlib" part and I bet you'll get it. When he's involved there's this expectation that he's gonna go Lootpack or Madvilliany with it.

I'm guessing that Madlib doesn't like to be figured out. That's why he picked Gibbs. If you listen to the album a couple times, all that classic Madlib Madvillany shit is there. Just gangsta'd out. Thats what makes it a classic. It doesn't get old. The formula is too dope.

i bought the cd and i youtube to mp3 the eps and made it on one cd-r for this. its very good but im guilty of not listening enough times. i dont like gibbs and it isnt his subject matter or voice, its him i dont like but madlib is the greatest producer ever. so its difficult for me.

im with gino. i can't say gibbs does much for me lyrically, idk y but the 2pac from indiana original appeal he had has eventually turned into underwhelming commercial attempts like the album that followed this.

this album was aight. i think i still own either the tape or the cd cuz i know i flipped at least one of them on discogs. i mainly copped cuz madlib is da god and this seemed promising at first.

madvillain > strong arm steady > percee p > pinata > med & blu

pinata isn't a classic to me personally but i do enjoy it and can understand why other people might consider it a classic. it's just not consistent enough to me. there are 17 tracks on here and most of them are great but the album is 60 minutes long and really starts to drag on towards the end. i also don't think this is madlibs best set of beats, they still have that madlib touch but definitely feel toned down to accomodate gibbs style. if i were to make a list of my top 10 madlib projects i don't even know if this would make be on there. this album is a melding of two different styles and i don't think it works on every single track.

it's hard not to compare this album to madvillainy, and i don't think pinata is anwhere close to that level. with madvillainy it seemed like madlib created these experimental beats specifically for DOOM, and DOOM adapted to them perfectly. DOOM and madlib were a perfect fit on that album, and i don't get that vibe from pinata. gibbs and madlib don't have that synergy that makes a duo really shine. also even though madvillainy has 5 more tracks than pinata, it's much more interesting and engaging than pinata. madvillainy feels like it's in a constant state of flux due to how short the tracks are and because DOOM is only rapping on 15 of the 22 tracks.

overall pinata is still a very good album, i'd probably give it an 8 or 8.5/10, but ultimately it's held by it's pacing, repetitiveness, and overall length, i think cutting 5-10 minutes off the album would have done wonders for it. if they decided to collab again on a follow up album i wouldn't be mad though.

favorite tracks:

higher
shitsville
deeper
thuggin
shame
harold's

not to switch subjects, but what if madlib and homeboy sandman did an album??? i think it'd be crazy

wait come to think of it, is madlib even still with stones throw? why did i used to think he ran that label along with pb wolff and that egon dude? are any of those guys still with or involved in stones throw?

that's what i've been hoping for every single homeboy sandman got signed to stones throw.

PB wolf and madlib are both still with the label, but egon left in 2011 i believe to start his own record label "now-again". i'm sure he's still cool with all those guys though.

Piņata is the first collaborative studio album of Gibbs and Madlib that rocks the hip hop world. If you have different tastes, you'll find it sucks.
