even though i'm more of a nas fan, i prefer the takeover to ether. takeover plays like an actual song to me, whereas ether sounds specifically like a diss track. i know i'm not explaining it right. i hate the ether beat. i don't even think nas flows well on that track, tbh.

takeover, on the other hand, it's crazy to me how confident jay sounds on that, as well as the rest of the blueprint. there's this matter-of-fact assured-ness to his voice that you don't hear on other albums. like he's king of the world. he sounds more casual on later albums, whereas he sounds like he could run through walls on takeover.

see i prefer jay over nas but ether is fuckin amazing. he killed jay-z with that.

id really like to see people drop the "who ur supposed to put in ur top 10" bullshit and compile ther personal 10 favorite rappers. cuz i bet my truck more people would give other people shit for "bad rap opinions" if they did without acting like a butt sniffer and putting who they think should be in ther top 10.

if im being open minded id put nas in my top 10 of all time. but personally i dont think he'd break top 20 for me. but the fact that he got a best of mix in my truck with the likes of ghostface and mf doom is special to me cuz nas just has one of those voices that wen its coming thru over a great beat sounds like rap heaven.

people can say what they will about nas, but he rips his guest features apart. live at the bbq, verbal intercourse, eye for an eye, let my n*ggas live, don't get carried away, etc. shit is undeniable.

its crazy how good that battle was

I like ether for the reason it doesn't sound like a proper song, its just nas going at Jay, there venom in that track

damn right about Jay sounding confident, he pretty much was king of Hip Hop at the time. he had ignored nas for as long as he could but he had to go at him

dope

I scream at the mirror, curse, askin God, "Why me?"
Run in the black church, gun in my hand, y'all try me
I'm God-son, son of man, son of Marcus Garvey
Rastafari irie, Ha-ile Selassie
Police'll try to break us, but the streets raised us
It takes more than metal bars, we destined for ours
I hear murder plans from dopefiends, with elephant hands
Snots in they nostril, the blocks is hostile
There's no pots to piss in, Glocks is spittin
Rocks cookin underground bodies stiffin, cops look at bird shit
Drop on the window pane, the oxygen is cocaine
It drove lots of men to die with no name
I been on boats, nut down throats, pee on bitches who famous
Pretty dick, puttin stitches in they anus
I'm the animal that Hugh Heffner created
The only n*gga Sade dated, the most hated, Nas n*gga

that ether beat was like something i made up in my head but couldnt actually make it was so perfect to me. i never liked that takeover beat at all and it ruined it. plus u gotta root for the underdog cuz jay is undeniably the most well rounded and greatest of all time.

this is going to sound random, but i got to recommend this book itt:

It is the story of a young LA gang member named East, who is sent by his uncle along with some other teenage boys—including East’s hothead younger brother—to kill a key witness hiding out in Wisconsin. The journey takes East out of a city he’s never left and into an America that is entirely alien to him, ultimately forcing him to grapple with his place in the world and decide what kind of man he wants to become.

the brothers in this remind me of nas. or the characters nas raps about. highly recommended read. especially for fans of the wire.

i don't think the original i am nastradaumus double album would have been good, tbh. there's a lot of filler on that tracklist you just posted.

i really like the idea of fetus being the final track, rather than the first, like is it on the lost tapes.

NaS - Life Is Good is so fucking underrated. It's really the bookend album with Illmatic, imo. He could have retired right there and I would have been all good.

When you guys talk about a theme, or cohesiveness, LIG is better than IWW, in regards to that.

Gino we can keep on checking in with each other to see who's the most hipster between the two of us for the rest of our lives, but if it will make you feel better about yourself then I will concede and admit that you are actually the bigger hipster out of the two of us and I will respectfully bow out of this competition.

well this thread seems to have finally slowed down.

tippi, i see you lurking. read/buy any good comics lately?

i just read:

the new captain phasma - pretty meh, tbh. wouldn't recommend.

og flash gordon 1934-37, on the planet mongo - hella dated, but cool. i have no idea how alex raymond was able to write and draw a page length story once a week for so long, without crashing and burning. and how did he actually keep the story going? you'd think the guy would run out of ideas. it does get repetitive a bit, but still.

vision 1: litte worse than a man - i enjoyed this a lot. the "behold (insert character name)" every time a new character - no matter how banal they were - was introduced was pretty funny. i liked the story, and got to grab volume two asap.

extremity 1: the artist - this one was cool, but waiting to see where it goes in volume two. cool world building.

oh, also:

the latest issue of attack on titan. and re-read the previous two issues. really enjoying where the story's at right now. you can feel like it's getting close to the series climax. issue ends with the beginning of a huge showdown. so hyped for next month's issue.

and started reading warren ellis' transmetropolitan. read the first four issues. going to read five and six either today or tomorrow. digging it, so far.

This thread gives me a flashback to when i first started boarding. Get home from work and there's a thread with 140 replies.

It Was Written is good, not great. The multitude of reasons have already been outlined in this beauty of a thread, mainly the meh attempt at being commercial along with some inconsistent beats. Take it in Blood isn't one of my Top 5 tracks on the album.

Third favorite Nas album...

Illmatic
The Lost Tapes
It Was Written
Life Is Good
God's Son
I Am
Stillmatic
Nikker
Hip Hop Is Dead
Streets Disciple
Nastradamus

And Camron is so fucking overrated it's not even funny. Dude doesn't have one album over a 6/10 and most are under 5/10.

Just need to cosign take it in blood being classic. Top 5 Nas track and the beat is 10/10. Saying that... Strangely I kind of get how it sounds in a way similar to alot of the throwaways he's rapped on, but to me it's perfection, it's done right.

Street dreams is my least favourite track on the album

88 - i haven’t bought any comics in a while, believe it or not lol. last order was in early december i think, whenever the jack kirby fourth world omni came out. trying to put a dent in my backlog right now and since i haven’t bought anything in a while i won’t feel so guilty about picking up that $450 infinity gauntlet box set next month. the infinity saga is one of my favorite stories ever in comics so i’m hyped to reread it in this new format. might even sell my infinity gauntlet omnibus to get some money back, since i’d have that material in this box set.

recently i’ve been re-reading christopher priest’s black panther run in preparation for the movie. also superior foes of spider-man by nick spencer & steve lieber, one of the most consistently funny comics i've read from either marvel or DC.

glad you were digging vision though, thats definitely one of my favorite runs in the last few years. everything ive read from tom king has been impressive.

nice.

on deck, i got to read volumes three and four of tezuka's phoenix. volume two was out of this world, so that's hype. also harvey pekar's american splendor. i took a break from cerebus after book two. book three and four are a two parter story, so i'm trying to find some room for that, because it seems pretty epic.

recently, i bought some EC comics collections.

88!?!?!?!

Take It In Blood is one of my favorite Was songs. I love how he rides that beat.

This album is a personal classic to me. I agree with everything you said minus the comment about Take It In Blood and If I Ruled The World.

If I Ruled The World was a perfect crossover song at that time and still allowed him to keep his original fanbase. The song is a little strange to be on this album, but it definitely wasn't misplaced. It definitely belonged being the last track. A nice closeout after the harder tracks towards the end

that's fair to say, s-agent. i just think, if he wanted to close the album out with if i ruled the world, he should have maybe had a less dark song right before it, or something. to go from a mobb deep track to if i ruled the world seems kind of jarring. perhaps if he put either affirmative action or watch dem n*ggas as the penultimate track, it would have segued more smoothly into if i ruled the world.
