guy was brilliant, made amazing music and has lived a crazy ass life. i wouldnt say this set is essential cuz some of his specific albums are essential not just songs but this is a fully playable double cd, not a bad song.

been going fucking heavy this week with dj shadow's 90's work. man, it's like i just heard all this shit for the first time this week. i've owned endtroducing/preemptive strike for years and always knew they were a big deal, but i didn't usually listen to them. this week, when i hit play, it clicked. this is some of the greatest shit ever made in hip hop. the drums, alone. this shit paved the way for all the instrumental hip hop i listen to today. just listen to how cool and atmospheric what does your soul look like (pt. 4) is. there's so many little things going on in the background in that song that are dope to me. all his 90's music is so essential. fav tracks: in/flux, what does your soul look like (pt. 4), midnight in a perfect world, what does your soul look like (pt. 1), lost and found, building steam with a grain of salt

ive yet to connect on a higher level with endtroducing and im not sure i will. but the story surrounding that album and how he found all the samples and the place he dug makes me like it more. that total breakdown comp is decent and ive always liked the q bert mix that came with preemptive strike.

that's exactly how i felt about it, until this week, actually. i appreciated the context and influence, but not the actual music all that much. that's all changed now. i'm a new man. might ask my boss for a raise today, thanks to shadow.

always loved the man in me (see: big lebowski), but was indifferent to the rest of the album, until the last few months. this has grown on me a lot. i used to prefer george harrison's version of if not for you, and even thought dylan's version was terrible, but dylan's version is now my fav, by far, lol. how our tastes change overtime. fav tracks: the man in me, if not for you

haven't listened to this in forever. it's still good. their energy is undeniable, and the dust brothers keep up with them, via their manic sampling. a few tracks are skippable, but overall classic. fav tracks: sounds of science, egg man

shit sp90 i forget wat table i got, but its nicer and it was free.

88, thats the all piano dylan album right? that was truly the last good bob dylan album before he became retarded and unlistenable. i love 60's and 70's dylan and ive always liked that man in me song but seriously once he got into the 80s and 90s the drugs caught up to him and he sounds like shit. and his son jacob dylan was more of an audio xanax bar than roc marciano.

i haven't heard too much dylan. just freewheelin', bring it all home, blonde on blonde, and new morning. haven't heard any 80's, 90's, or later stuff by him, and ain't really in a rush to, tbh. too much other stuff to listen to.

oh, god. i'm going to have to delete so much shit off my ipod for this to fit on it. one of the major musical documents of the 20th century. this shit "made the 60's". was streaming this earlier, but hyped to go home and get it. not looking forward to the consequential itunes delete job, trying to choose what to delete.

The whole Jazzmatazz series is slept on. 3 is my personal favorite. The lineup on that album is crazy. Still have a special place in heart for the first one. I remember being like 15 when my buddy got it. We both drank some shitty Hawkey Vodka and took turns listening to it on the headphones. Shit was DAFFY.

One more week of work and I'm on vacation though. Off to Florida. Getting fucking hyped. Been going with these this week

still couldn't tell you exactly how I feel about this album, but I do know that I like it. Digging it on the first few spins for sure. It gives me the same feeling I get from dudes like JonWayne, just this new breed of artist that I never knew existed dropping some dope ass music.

ok, honestly I haven't listened to this much this week, but there's not a single day that goes by that I don't think about it or have some lyrics stuck in my head. I know we've praised the hell out of it but I truly feel like this is one of the absolute best records we've gotten in modern Hip Hop. It's just flawless from front to back. This dude Ace said

"I used to floss the albatross like Daddy Kane with chain"

You can't tell me he's not the illest lyricist walking the planet. I'm just not having it anymore.

Have yet to listen to this, just now got it in the mail actually. Super excited though. I've been wanting to get into Cannonball's music ever since I read Miles Davis' biography. He's got an absolutely incredible lineup here too. Should be a good listen.

" watch what you say" was the og jazzmatazz track that made me wanna check all those albums out

I been on my middle school shit past couple days:

Nelly- Country Grammar

Surprisingly still a good ass album

Wu Tang- The W

Some weak songs but still one of my favorite wu releases

Also i discovered vaporwave and sythwave, two genres i generally like the idea of. First album i like here is "Hyperion" by Sasac, in fact all of his albums sounded great. Also the first album, "Yellow Light District" by Brian Ellis.
Also been checking my dude Hype Williams' albums. Always been a fan but none of his shit is mindblowingn, good background music

Also cannot get enough of the new Do Make Say Think album. Theyre a post-rock band from Canada

Been peeping the early shoegaze of My Bloody Valentine's "Isn't Anything". Good album but overhyped

And heard Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable" for the first time. Liked half of it alot for the wonderful smoothe jazziness and that well rounded voice, didnt like the sappiness and sameness of some songs

good story graph bout the jazzmatazz album lol, thats awesome.

that cannonball album is a classic of course but im not much of a bluenote jazz collector. alot of it is too traditional. im trying to build my impulse records lately but alot are expensive. i think i have like 8 of em.

mtume said in the "finding the funk" documentary that he discovered or atleast first heard of funk thru horace silver and cannonball adderley thru ther live records, that it wasnt james brown where he first heard the term funk. it makes sense. funk was being made well before that genre formed. and def thru jazz.

88 how was your vacation dood?

vacation was dope. i didn't go anywhere, since, even though i had work off during the days, i still had rehearsals in the evening. but the fringe festival was on, so i went to shows every day. it was awesome. saw something like 25 plays last week. one of the best ones was my city's opera performing pagliacci in a church. the acoustics of the church made it incredible, especially when the baritone lead sang the famous song from pagliacci. a real special moment. shit was only $13, and seeing an opera is typically $200.

listening to random tracks from the booker t & the mg's catalogue. fuck, i love this kind of music. these guys are somewhat hit and miss, but their good tracks are heaven to my ears. so great for the background, while you're chilling. fav tracks: sunny, summertime, stranger on the shore, comin' home baby, my sweet potato, golden slumbers

bobby hebb's sunny is just one of my all time fav songs in general, and i don't think i've heard a cover of it i didn't like. booker t's version, though, is incredible to me. fans of the gravediggaz will recognize the beginning of the track, since prince paul sampled it for their 1-800-suicide track.

i think your reply to this thread is what's obnoxious tbh, basically just complaining for the sake of complaining. if you don't care about what other people are listening to, then why would you click on the thread in the first place when you know exactly what it's going to be?

threads like these can be found on pretty much every single music forum out there.

to answer your question though: why can't it be both? the point of threads like these is for people to be able to put people on to music they may not have heard before, and to discover new music themselves. i've found out about plenty of albums from these threads that i've never heard of before, and i appreciate them for that.
