In what will go down as the closest vote for any AOTY we've ever had, Vaudeville Villain edged out King Geedorah - Take Me to Your Leader by 1 point. I recounted and recounted until my eyes began getting blurry just to be sure. Thanks to everyone that participated. This has been a lot of fun. Looking forward to the next one.

Here's the Top 10 from the final round...

Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain 48
King Geedorah- Take Me to Your Leader 47
Brother Ali - Shadows On The Sun 41
Little Brother - The Listening 40
Gang Starr - The Ownerz 35
Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Vol. 2 34
Jaylib- Champion Sound 34
50 Cent - Get Rich or Die Tryin 33
Jay-Z - The Black Album 33
Cunninglynguists- Southernunderground 33

vaudeville villain isn't in my top 10 for that year but i'm not mad at this at all, it's still a great album. probably my 5th or 6th favorite DOOM album but that's more of a comment on the overall strength of his discography. it's interesting that the ownerz landed in the top 5, definitely going to have to revisit that one soon. also surprised that louis logic didn't make it, guessing that must have been 11 or 12.

looking forward to whatever year y'all are doing next, hope it's as close as this one.

rolo who are you referring to? or is that directed towards anyone reading this thread that might disagree with this album winning? the only person who said it shouldnt have won is NWS and he's at least in his late 30s.

I ignored DJ Penis' stupid comment since he's always on my nuts. FTR, I bought this album within a couple weeks of it dropping. Let Me Watch is still the best song.

No way it's AOTY.

vaudeville villain is a sick album. doom bars never disappoint. this album was chock full of great rhymes and tripped out beats. well deserved. babbletron was my little snuck outta nowhere and slowly grew to became a personal fav of mine type of undergound rap album from that year. shouts to the space tech banana clip beat they got from doom on that jawnt. i actually used to prefer jaymanilla rhymes to cool calm pete, but cool calm slowly crept up as one of my favorite rhymers from about 2003-2010 before he fell outta the game to become richer by having a big boy job. glad to see all members have transitioned into adulthood rather smoothly. jaymanilla looks like robert downey jr irl now and seems to be a really good husband and father to his fam. dj pre still making beats on the low and one day he's gonna except my invite to collab. im just sure he is lol.

Only for a few more weeks...lol.

Then I get my AARP UGHH Card. I will get discounts for rap concerts, movie theatres, wgr clothing, and Denny's - so I got that going for me.

I hope that Pop Kill and Wicked accept me.

never been as big a fan of this album as most, tbh. iiwii, though. king geedorah too. although i love doom's parts on the album, and the beats are all perfection, i can't stand most of the featured guests on take me to your leader. but those tracks where doom raps are awesome, so whateva.

glad to see little brother got recognized, and made it into the top 5.

damn you really weren't feeling the features on that album 88? which ones did you actually like? i thought kurious, gigan, john robinson, mr fantastik, trunks, and hassan chop were all had great verses on there. almost all of them have their own moment to shine and that variety gives the album a lot of replayability. that album also has some of DOOM's best production imo, but i wish he had a couple more verses.

glad the little brother album made top 5 too, hoping we'll see the same thing happen with the minstrel show.

the track with john robinson is my fav doom-less track on the album. the rest is butt to me.

i'm not a fan of kurious. his slow flow doesn't really work on fast lane. his flow sounds awkward to me. gigan has a terrible voice that i simply can't listen to. feel the same about mf grimm as i do about kurious (don't kill me, ughh). mr. fantastik and trunks do their thing. i fuck with those tracks. hassan chop's flow doesn't work over that beat and the chorus is god awful. he just isn't a good enough rapper to tackle that beat. and his voice is generic and unmemorable.

in general, these guys just don't deserve these beats, imo, so i prefer to just listen to these beats on the special herbs series. doom should have hogged the mic, imo. but i know that's an unpopular opinion, and most people love take me to your leader. i'm a huge fan of the doom rapping tracks, but not much else on there. i have the same feelings about viktor vaughn. the guests are one of the negatives for me about that album. not a fan of the femcee on let me watch, for example.

shit, i love that "i wonder" track with hassan chop lol. i don't find that hook annoying at all either, that track was always one of the standout moments on the album to me since the first time i heard it. to each his own though obviously. sometime's i'll just listen to that 3 track block of anti-matter, lockjaw, and i wonder on repeat.

i've always liked the beat, but, yeah, i can't stand that uninspired hook. i just listened to it for the first time in a long time on youtube, while responding to the previous comment, and it's crazy how cringe that hook is to me. it's so clumsy, and his random-guy-off-the-street voice doesn't help either. it seriously reminds me of when ughh members rap. that untrained, tone deaf vocal style. and i don't mean that as a diss to ughh. we're not rappers. this guy "is". the standards are higher. and, yet, it's like doom grabbed crumple or no mask for a song. it's crazy.

lol fuck, you're really comparing him to crumple right now. god damn. just to be clear i don't think hassan chop is a great rapper by any means, at least not based on the few tracks i've heard from him. dude is definitely average but i think that works in his favor on that track specifically because of the content, it's just him looking back on his life choices in a way that comes across as really genuine to me and it kind of ties into the whole concept/theme of the album, where this three headed space monster is basically channeling his thoughts through DOOM to give us his perspective on humans and earth in general from the point of view of an outsider based on what he's observed. idk i dig it.

i get it. i'm not complaining about the content of his verses or how they tie into the album's larger narrative. i'm complaining more about his cadence and vocal limitations. he just sounds generic and unforgettable to me in his verses, and then awful on the hook. he lacks charisma and vocal talent. two essential surface level factors of rapping, imo.

Guess I slept on that 50 Cent- I had no interest back then, and well, kinda still don't. I never thought Little Brother was as great as everyone else either.

I'm in my late 30s, almost (whatever late is, I'll say I'm in my mid 30s) but I would've been like 21 or 22 when this came out, so why would being in early 20s when this came out make a difference?? That was like prime ughh years- early 2000s

i think one of the reasons i'm so against that track is because of the beat. it's one of the unique beats in doom's special herbs series, and he goes and lets crumple's stunt double rap on it. i know you don't see this guy as a crumple type, but put yourself in my shoes for a second, and imagine that he DOES seem like that. wouldn't that be awful? if doom wasted one of the more distinct beats from his catalog on a crumple look-a-like? imagine that. that's how i feel, when i hear hassan chop on this beat. fuck that hook, lol. [Editor's Note: 88 actually believes Hassan's voice is more comparable to Knowself's than Crump's, in terms of the types of limitations it displays]

god, i just listened again, lol. listen to how he "comes in" for his first verse. it's like the start of a freestyle verse. he just unceremoniously starts speaking. but, then, ironically, his rapping morphs into this melodramatic song with mumbling hook and all. he starts the song in a freestyle way that implies a lack of structure, but then it's one of the more structured songs on the album, because a lot of the album songs don't even have a hook. it's bizarre. i wish we hadn't started this conversation. it must end, before i listen to this song so much i grow to love it. [Editor's Note: That is impossible, because the song sucks too much]

2005 my all time fav year post 2002. 2004 was nasty too. but 0-5 really got it right

cool calm pete - lost

edan - beauty and the beat

and the all time goat sean p monkey bars release (one of my most played albums of all time)

all the way down to lb's minstel show, the likwit junkies release and the best fat joe album in the 2000's all or nothing

so many more gems tho... (junk science, big shugs overdue debut and equally ill prelude mixtape, wait wasn't that the year of danger doom too???!)

shouts to 04 too. i got 2 huge rows of great releases from that year, too

looking forward to voting dem years

Yo ETW it seems like your taste is more in the minority, as evidenced by you not agreeing with any of those years AOTY choices. So dont know why you even set expectations on one of your favorite albums winning at this point. Just embrace it instead of getting so heated about it.
