1. King Geedorah- Take Me to Your Leader
2. Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain
3. 50 Cent - Get Rich or Die Tryin
4. Canibus - Rip The Jacker
5. Jay-Z - The Black Album

I revisited damn near every album in the finals over the past week. That Gang Starr album is decent at best. A lot of filler track/beats. I remember hating that Rza when it first dropped but it's a gem, save for a few tracks. As 88 said, a lot of fire beats on there. Never been a fan of Brother Ali and bumping this again didn't change my mind. Nice content but something about his voice grates on me and inconsistent beats. The JMT album in the finals is one of my least favorite JMT albums. Rip The Jacker is great, even all these years later. It does take a little of the greatness away from me tho knowing Bis and Stoupe didn't actually work on it together. Emo Technique album holds up better than i remember it and better than a lot of albums on this list.

Sole-selling live water is really the best album that year. easily. that albums detailed production, creativity, sole's energy, intensity, real poetic rhymes and next level social commentary make 99% of the other 2003 albums sound like childs play/kid rap. people like to auto diss anticon but they were beyond the rest for a few years.

a lot of doo made it to this round and more creative, skillful albums wernt voted ahead.

That Sole album would've probably been my 6th or 7th pick. Don't care much for Sole but that album is dope.

It came down to did i want to list underground albums just to list underground albums or the five best albums out of the 21 in the finals. There's a lot of good but not great albums on that list.

I remember buying Bottle of Humans off Sandbox back in 2000, which was when i was at peak underground n00b Anticon fanboism.

ETW is a big Sole fan.

No albums on this list i disdain. 2003 was a better year then i initially thought when i made the nomination thread.

My advice? Go back and listen to it front to back again..

Maaaybe 2 songs TOPS are not flawless bangers. Everything else is.

Easily cops a squat and shits upon every album from 03. 50 cent was a distant second. That album was banging hard as fuck everywhere.

cosign ollie. that gangstarr wasnt great and i was a huge gangstarr fan since 1990. i iiked every album up until the bonerz .half the beats are weak-more basic, boring and more formulaic then ever, weak features, feels uncohesive. people just got questionable taste.

i never liked the 50 album or 50. 50 raps like a brain dead child. sounds like an ignorant child with his subject matter and attitude. but of course many get swept up by that big budget , ignorant (especially the dre related) watered down, negative, gangsta crap.

at liquid dose- its 50 cent shit thats "gay" and dumbed down NOT anticon- they were the most creative, skilled, next level and interesting crew for a few years.

and anybody that cant appreciate anticon when they were in their prime (98-2003) must be incapable of processing the next level illness and artistic level and/or your brainwashed to hate white emcees that arnt wiggers. your ego needs a negative, cool guy black man image to feel secure dosnt it?

its sad and a joke to me that 50's boring shit, jays pop album, rza's huge flop, that weak heiro album made it to the last round and many proven more creative and dope albums didnt get voted ahead.

you can say nerdy and white but those 2 things are superficial and not at all relevant.lol

so its just the voice. and soles voice isnt really nerdy or bad. doseone could be an aquired taste. they had undeniable albums between 98-2003 if you can get past the voice thing. your missing out if you deny yourself those important projects (just based on the voice or whatever)cause they really did advance rap and offer original next level super artistic shit! not saying i liked all their shit. they were the tip of the hip hop spear for a few years-when many artists just re hashing old shit and staying generic and boring, lacking lyrics and substance.

rap dosnt always have to be super cool, over confident, arrogant guys or about race.

the ownerz is undeniably the weakest ganstarr album. the shitty filler intro, a bunch of weak beats, bad features. snooze fest supreme. but its got a handful of ill tracks and guru!

premo been slippin since 1999. i was let down when his sound got so streamlined (beats got so formulaic and repetitive) starting in '97. moment of truth is great but we hated on it at first cause the production style was so simple and repetitive.

premo went from having hype beats with change ups and more layers and samples (more detailed)like this one:

to just chopping a 2-4 bar piano sample and adding basic programmed drums and adding little after thgat. too much of that went on forever too.

he devolved.

no more mr nice guy- 3.5/5
step in the arena- 4.5/5
daily operation-5/5
hard to earn- 4.5/5
moment of truth- 4/5
the ownerz- 3/5

This AOTY made me realise 2003 was a decent year in hip hop. Some quality joints dropped this year. 2007 was WACKKKKK! 2003 was chill. Respeck to these AOTYs. Keep em going. We probably should do four rounds instead of three. Keep the same formula, I think

Terrible breakdown of The Owners by No Mask. I'm not surprised though. This goofball doesn't even like liquid swords or cuban linx.

First off....great Intro. RIP HQ.

Second...Beats are incredible. Primo is in top form. Musically and lyrically it's exactly what Gang Starr fans and real hip hop heads wanted.

The guest verses are all exceptional. Including Snoop. Fat Joe and MOP destroy Who Got Gunz. That song has one of Preem's best scratched hooks ever. Krumbsnatcha, Ghetto Child, Jadakiss, Freddie Fox, NYGz, Hannible Stacks each blow the spot up and Guru holds it down like one of the best as usual.

The album is incredibly cohesive and flows perfect. If you weren't feeling this I find it hard to believe you were a Gang Starr fan in the first place.

Again, terrible commentary from No Mask and Clockwork on this album. You gotta be fuckin' kidding me.

yeah clock, I just played that rza album the other day....it's good, but it does have some really garbage tracks like "we pop" and "drink, smoke, and fuck"....but man, the good tracks (a day to god is 1,000 years, chi kung, fast cars, koto chotan, the birth) are so fucking good....a day to god is one of my favorite tracks of all-time tbh.

Ceedub...you were an Anticon fanboi for a minute?

Thats gay as fuck bro . How could you even consider it during that time period? There was hella dope rap popping off.

I was 17, first delving into the deep underground (i was onto borderline underground shit like Dilated Peoples well before that) , and buying hella underground shit off Sandbox, UGHH, and HipHopSite without any rhyme or reason. I wasn't only into Anticon at the time but i copped a bunch of their releases at the time. Within a year the majority of it started collecting dust while stuff like Violent By Design has remained ageless.

That Gang Starr album is overrated as fuck. By no means is it terrible but shouldn't even be in the Top 25 from 2003. Best track is the one with Jada.

1. Cunninglynguists- Southernunderground (personal classic)
2. Jaylib- Champion Sound
3. Louis Logic- Sin-A-Matic
4. Little Brother- The Listening
5. Gangstarr- The Ownerz

I'm one of the few people that doesn't like Birth of a Prince, the production bores me. I saw that Tame One- When Rappers Attack album in a previous round, surprised it didn't make the cut, that might have been my fourth or fifth choice. Shades of Blue too.
