Boston Lyricist Lounge
what did everyone think of it???
i thought it was a bit short, and was disappointed about the Outsidaz...
and the xzibit shirt i bought isn't worth 15 bucks...
and i wasn't feeling Clokworx. i didn't think they were wack, but...
it was my first time seeing KT, and i enjoyed the way he and his crew rocked the crowd...
so the blaze battle he won, was that like the overall final or something? or what stage was it exactly?...
what was up w/ the cat who was stepping up to Royce? was he serious? that was messed up, but royce seemed to handle it okay... was the dude just pissed about royce tossing some bills out there? anyway, he was lucky he got his frustrations out before screwball's set...
screwball was good. like i mentioned one other time, i didn't really think they fit the lyricist lounge type thing... but i seem to like most of their stuff.
it was great to see the Liks... but i wish they'd have done Daaamn or something like that rather than the new Tash stuff. especially since Xzibit was there...
but i think Xzibit rocked well, w/ lots of energy, and did a mix of old and new, though i missed "Friends and Enemies" and "Eyes May Shine"... maybe if he had more time-- i thought he was gonna go right up to 10pm... but i was just glad to finally see him anyway, since he was always one of my favorites...
i had fun of course (it was a hip-hop show after all)... but i guess i expected a bit more from the "Lyricist Lounge" name
considering how many groups performed though, i guess 15 bucks wasn't a bad price...
i'm surprised blackstreet and mase even put out vinyl...
i don't think freestyle battles are strictly about lyrics... otherwise, it wouldn't be much different from the battles that go on in the emcee forum... it's also about delivery, flow, crowd interaction, etc etc, the many things that make an emcee nice, and i thought KT did all of that well at L.Lounge, clockworx didn't really get the crowd that into it (their fault or not, i dunno, but still), but when KT came out people got more energetic, so i respected him for that. same w/ screwball, people will hate on them for their ruff/"thuggish" style, but i can't stop liking them, especially after seeing them live... and from the sound of their sampler tape, i think their album will be pretty decent...
the Jeru show was definitely better, as was the Mr. Lif show...
Quest, how could you just pick one or two of the local emcees? i think that'd be a damn tough decision... but that'd be awesome if you could get something like an ughh tour going. i'm sure plenty of the people on here would be willing to help w/ random stuff... especially since there's people from all over. i vote that you have screwball on the tour (but nobody else from lyricist lounge, of course)...
This thread is almost on page 2 so noone will read this but: starting from the bottom.
Rob banks "when's the show gonna start 2:30 P.M." thats funny shit right there. Royce sucked, from my view it looked like he started the fight with the guy in the crowd, but I was in the back. I think you should have good lyrics to be at the lyricist lounge. Not thug shit, fuck that. But clockworx were my 2nd favorite behind xzibit and the liks, tash sounds better on cd than live though, his voice is whats dope, but he didnt sound the same.
Quest: that was a jackass move.
now some notes:
How did KT get 2nd place? He sounded average at best. I think that paradox kid could have taken KT out. Paradox should have won the little stage battle, but the MC (master of ceremonies, host) was trying to get the crowd to like the last guy. Anyone know paradox? Does he post in the freestyle forum? I also liked the first kid that lost to paradox, he was alright. Oh then jam'n 94.5 giving out free stuff outside, I was like oh dope free shit, then I see its Mase and Blackstreet vinyl, and keychains that say jam'n. That blackstreet vinyl flew for like 70 yards when I tossed it down the street.
Yes, I agree that Jeru show a couple of weeks ago in Cambridge, MA was pretty damn good.
For real though, Lyricist LOunge 99 was garbage. I didnt get there til like 8. So I didnt see alot of groups. HOw were Royce and Clokworx?? That said, the only people I saw were Choclair, Screwball, and Xzibit with the Liks. Choclair and Screwball both were dope and played nice sets. And eventhough Im not a big Xzibit fan, I think sometimes hes phat (ie. Papparazzi, Concrete w/ Shabaam Sahdeeq), then he can be wack (ie. Bitch Please w/ Snoop Dogg), but still I thought he represented and put on a better and much more enthusiastic show then I thought he would.
Heres my problem with Lyricist Lounge 99. I saw Lyricist LOunge 98 last year in Philadelphia. Philly s show, which I dont believe started until 930, when this years show ended, was full of dope acts and MANY SPECIAL GUESTS. It also went on until close to 2 am. The show there consited of Eminem, Rahsun, Schooly D (hip hop legend), Common (hip hop legend), De La Soul (hip hop legends), Blackthought (hip hop legend), KRS-One (hip hop legend), Last Emperor, Dead Prez, and Infamous Syndicate( ok they suck). And DJ JAzzy Jeff and DJ Cash Money, both legendary turntablists were there. Must I go on.... So you can imagine how shitty the Boston concert was in comparison to that. I thought the Jeru Akrobatik Skizos show was doper like 2 wks ago. Whos gonna be on next years tour?? Milkbone? and whens the show start 230 pm??
quest, that tour sounds like the ish...you definitely got to put that together
No, the tour would NOT be just local Boston MC's - no way (maybe one or two).
Our site knows many artists who would be interested (not to mention all of the artists whom our radio DJ's know as well).
i liked the show and had a good time last night. i was feelin the choclair, kardinall, solitair set as well as the screwball set.
of course the alkies and xzibit absolutely destroyed it, the place went nuts. it was great to see people like choclair, xzibit, etc. rock it. it will probably be a while before i am able to see them perform again. i agree, it was nice to see sir jinx on the wheels, he is cool peoples.
hey lee bradberry, about the Royce thing...
as far as i could tell, royce was just rhyming and doing his thing, then in between songs some dollars fell out of his sweats, so he bent to pick them up and instead of tucking them back in he just sorta tossed them into the crowd (he didn't make a big deal out of it, he just dropped a few bills out) then it looked like this dude about 8 feet to my left threw a bill back and maybe said something. then, if i remember correctly, royce said "[something-something] i'm the one w/ the mic..." and next thing you know, the guy in the crowd takes off his medallion and tosses it on stage by Royce (royce was up toward the edge ot the stage), then took off his shirt and sweater and stood there w/ his arms up like he was gonna do something. then royce's man was trying to calm the dude down and told him to take his clothes back or something, and started passing him 20 dollar bills, it was real weird... then i guess security came out and "escorted" the tough guy away. then royce rhymed acapella and the promoters promoted peace and the show just continued... w/o the outsidaz though...
i don't have any mp3s.
I had a great time last nite at the Lyricist Lounge show and the after party! All the acts that performed came with mad energy. I dont know about the middle and the back, but the front row sure was wild! I gotta agree with Math though, i really wanted to see Xzibit perform 'Eyes May Shine'. Thats gotta be one of my favorite Xzibit tracks.
So,Quest was responsible for the power outage. No more underground hiphop shows for u! It's time to retire the camera and hand it over to a professional(me)!
and you could charge different prices for different people, to cash in even more... like, for every post of somebody's you've had to delete, that's an extra buck...
i think that would be a good idea to put together a tour
it would make you some extra duckets
you couldn't have ALL the local boston mc's on there though
i think you would have to put in some other underground groups in there
go for it
you could have it every year and then sell out and cash in on all the people that give ya grief on this board
i'm all bout sellin out
the boston/cambridge cats perform on a pretty consistent basis around here, and you'd think yeah, it would get old, seeing the same groups all the time... but it really hasn't (that's why i was hoping to see more of them represented at lyricist lounge)...
I wanna know more about that Royce beef...are we talkin about tha bad half? Royce Da 5'9"? Anyone got any mp3s by him? what's the closest Lyricist Lounge will ever make it to Roanoke, VA?
undergroundhiphop.com tour sounds cool.
but honestly, I'm sure you would only feature the same 5 acts from boston...and that would get pretty old I think.
I thought the show was garbage except for the Likwit crew. Plus I was happy as fuck to see Sir Jinx djing for them.
Xzibit, Tash and Clockworx made it worth every penny. It's all about energy to me. How hungry an artist is, how much they're feelin the show, the crowd, the music, the whole vibe. Thats what gets me amped more than anything. X and Tash have been around a long time and to see that much love and excitement from them was refreshing. I don't care how good an mc is, if he's gonna rock a live show, he needs to come with it. I've seen too many mc's that could easily have put me to sleep.
Ummm, other thoughts on the show.... let's see, Clockworx were dope, as was Choclair. Royce the Sucker showed up and reminded us how important it is to murder anyone that gets in our way. Ignorant MC's...too many of em. The rest of the acts were forgettable as well... KT is aiight, but there's no way he's winning second place in a Blaze Battle unless the only people competeing were him, Virtuoso and ummm...Royce the sucker. I mean, second place? Virtuoso in first makes sense, KT in second doesn't, but such is life.
I should've got up there and did my thing when he asked (a million times) if there were any females that wanted to rep on stage. hopefully I won't regret that for too long, but I'm not an MC, and I didn't want to get up there and bust out with my spoken word.. although needless to say I would've blown any and all of those off the stage (not that that would be difficult) what is it with girls always rhyming about how hardcore they are..sounding like a bunch of female Nore's. Pitiful.
BE AT THE MC BATTLE ON SUNDAY NIGHT!!!
How about after the show, Royce rhyming over Skitzofreniks' State on 88.9?
Anyone get a dub of that one?
so that's what happened to the sound during Choclair... security should have sat your ass outside w/ Royce's new "buddy" for that one...
The highlight of the show was me accidently cutting the power to the turntables during Choclair's set - my bad on that one (I was surprised I didn't get thrown out for doing it - BIG C'UP!).
This was the first hip hop show I've been to where there was beef witnessed (as math mentioned earlier - the guy who seemed to want to fight Royce). That ish was wickedy wack.
Overall I wasn't feeling the show that much (just being honest). Xzibit w/ the Liks was hot for sure as was Choclair's set (except for me f*cking up their set by mistake - I owe them one). As for the Outsidaz not showing up - what was up with that? It appeared they were late but haven't they ever heard of leaving EARLY for a show?
This show has encouraged me even more that we have to put together an UndergroundHipHop.com Tour which would blow the Lyricist Lounge Tour away.
What do you'll think?
