I don't know what the topic is...
The other day I just happened to stroll into the big Virgin record store here in Vancouver. So I mosey over to the hip hop section, and before I get there I see this shelf, it was obviously an important shelf, one of the ones that faces you as you travel through as store and says "look at me".
The featured material on this shelf included: Handsome Boy Modeling School, Swollen Members, Mos Def, The Funky Precadent, and some other shit I can't recall. But it was like the "feature" hip-hop shelf, and there was no CashMoneyBadboyRocAfellaRuffRyderNoLimit shit on there.
I was happy and at the same time wary. How long is it until there's a thousand emcees trying to sound like Mos with albums called "Dark on All Surfaces". Or Distended Appendages with their effort "The Knack for Not Falling Over".
Furthermore, if and when this happens, should I be happy that there's more emcees like Mos et al, or pissed because "the underground sound" has become the formula for commercial hip-hop to follow for that time period.
mos def's album isnt even worth buying. dub it off someone/ listen to it once then dub over it. its weak.
Yay! Now large corporate record stores market "underground" to their audience! They have everything! No need to support your local record store. You can get Mos Def at the mall.
spon, thats whats up. however i dis J-Z but not because everybody loves him but because i aint about what he rhymes about plus hes like boring and monotone and mundane and whatever..... your point is true though, im all about mad heads gettin down with the same shit. like mardi gras.... thats mad muthafuckas down with each other... we're talking thousands..... i respect heads who love what they love and dont sell out their principles for those of the masses.... rock on
thats the problem with M'F's nowadays..... when something gets too popular they wanna start hating on it....I mean damn, hip hop aint your bitch, don't cockblock...If its good and you like it,, who cares if 700 trillion OR 3 people like it... damn people , quit following others leads..I happen to like jay-z, even though the popular thing to do nowadays is hate on him.. but I really dont give a fuck... I like the shit and thats all that matters..
A-12 - im not sure about that completely...
from the emcees ive talked to their whole focus is get some loot off of their record to buy kiddie porn. Except for Willus Drummond, hes trying to put himself through "How to become a U.S. Citizen school". Since he flunked out of all of his marketing classes, he still needs to find his niche. My opinion is he should goto Mike Ills school of Intelligent posts and disses. Maybe he might even learn some proper grammer skills? Ya never know.
its an impossible mind puzzle!
heads always tend to bite consciously or subconsciously. just keep your ears open for real art. honest groups show you their hearts and dont take other heads sounds for granted by jumping on their shit. just keep searching for what you think is the bomb. oh yeah you should always expect shit to turn into a gay trend for commercialization! thats why dope groups main goal is to stay ahead instead joining the crowd.
