Personal Question - Starting charge for beats?
I've got some people interested in buying my beats, but i have no idea what a standard price would be for an unestablished MC buying a beat from you. I always hear about the $3000 thing for a known MC, or Label, but for an independent MC on no label, using the beat for his own EP, LP, or a compilation album, is something i just don't know where to even start a price at, anybody have any kind of experience or helpful words or something?
you know who it is
I'm always here, but if you don't want to post on here

You can download the copyright forms from the Library of Congress. There are also some useful articles you should read. Find it all here:
That's the ghetto way for beats too.
Or else you send it to the copyright office with the papers you need to. and it's like $30
How can you copyright a beat? I know the ghetto way of copyrighting your lyrics (by sending them to yourself), but i dont know about beats.
Damn, I hate having to do this, but more popped up. One cat I sold a track to asked, "well If I already paid you $350.00 for the track, why don't I get copyrights to it as well?" I said, "You paid me $350.00 as what I consider an initial fee. If you get a record deal and still want to use this track, I will then negotiate with your record label and will even knock off the $350.00 you already paid me." In the end, you end up selling your rights to the track to the label and not to the artist himself. I hope this also helps. At that moment, the artist would have to deal with his label regarding the publishing of the track you already sold to them.
Oh, I forgot to mention. Copyright all your tracks so at least you have that, you can start worrying about publishing when this cat makes a carreer for himself, if ever. By Copyrighting your work, you can guarantee that this cat won't turn around and sell your track to someone already signed. Publishing in my opinion is icing on the cake when it comes to unsigned cats, make sure you DO copyright tho'.
sell it for whatever price you think is reasonable. do not give up publishing though! i repeat.... if that shit blows up and goes platinum or even gold all you have is $300 and your name might not even appear on the credits as being a producer. learn a lesson from Pretty Boy (original producer of Nas' "Hate Me Now")and to all other producers of gold and platinum records who get fucked on pub.
It's one of those things that no one really has an answer for, it's one of those "Play By Ear" situations. I've done a couple of projects for cats that I really don't know and this is what I've got to say about it.
- Don't do shit at your crib (meaning put their vocals down).
- Are you giving them an already made track? Meaning, do you have to do additional editing to the beat(s) you're going to sell them? Some people can be picky and may not like the intro and would want you to change the beginning of the track, if so; charge more.
- If this cat has no deal, or manager or Mom or Dad with a nice crib in the suburbs that can support his or her beat habit, start with $300.00 for just the track, with no edits. This could be a track with (example) an Intro, Verse, Hook, Verse, Hook, Break, Verse, End Hook. If you have to say, eliminate the break because he wants the track to be more direct, charge more; $400.00 to $500.00.
- Give him a mastered track on DAT or CD format. Then tell him he needs to book studio time after he's got his verses down to record his vocals (If you need to hunt for a studio for him, charge more). Nowadays, someone can walk into a Studio, and if their shit is polished, can knock out vocals in two hours (my estimate is about $20.00 per hour with an engineer). If your mix is tight, all this cat has to worry about is the vocal mix.
I've done two projects for people like this here in L.A., where you live the studio rates may be different. I know a cat who does engineer work here in a studio and I send my clients to him (I thought he was kicking my cats down, but then I called another studio and the rate was pretty much the same).
Good luck! Peace.
thanks for the quick response gent....
nah aint my boy, i do shit for my boys for free...
and as far as i know, i've heard he's wack, so i'd charge him a lot.
