Do You Really Give A F*ck About Freestylin'??
a question for you folks out there in hiphop land...
do you rate how dope an MC is by how well he can freestyle? personally i dont give a fuck about freestyling or anyone who does it, most of my favorite MCs dont freestyle or enter battles.....i think its two totally different things, if you can battle dope then cool but that doesnt make you an ill mc....and if your a really ill mc and can write some sick deep shit then cool but that doesnt mean you would make it to round two of a battle...
i love to write and rap...i do it all the time but ive never entered a battle, i dont see the point, i rap to relate how i feel about myself and the world not too diss another person, his momma and crew.....does that make sense? or would you consider me wack for the simple fact i dont freestyle?
i dunno, was just thinking on it so heres a sporadic post about it.....
i love to freestyle and i dont like to battle. i do if i am called out, but i dont go searching for it. too many people think freestyling is only for battling purposes. i like to do it to see what kind of ill shit i can come up with.
I can freestyle. I've never made a classic album. ...
I defer to people who can't freestyle and have classic albums.
On stage, I can kick some rhymes for a while, but I don't have an ill set or anything.
I defer to those who do.
(I do a lot of wordplay in freestyles... "Mine... mind... I meant to say mind... I hope they don't mind if I didn't mean what I said.. fiend off the head" or somesuch said on one yesterday...)
the definition of freestyle has definitely changed over the years. now if you kick a written from a forthcoming 12" or LP over someone else's beat on a mixtape or radio show, it's a freestyle. it's not just an untitled track. i think that's wacK. i used to get excited when emcees would kick rhymes over different beats, and nowadays heads are like "awww man! he's using the blah blah blah rhymes." it's just changed with everything else about hip-hop.
as far as freestyling being important, i don't think it is - at all; however, emcees who actually can - impress the shit out of me. take a listen to c-rayz walz or apathy. i know they throw a lot of writtens in their freestyles, but a good 40% (at least) are off the garlic knot.
"rollin' thru da' hood like a greasy dick."
i feel you demon, but most of those freestyles you hear are pre rehearsed even if they sound like they are stright off the mind, the art of freestyling has been tainted by cats that really aint all that ill at free'n so they go ahead and write some shit, and then you are in awe that someone can spit somethin so ill off the top, dont get me wrong peeps can do it, but i dont believe someone can freestyle and every other line is just so ill that you shit your pants, it might be possible, but i will give you this-- i was recently in a battle and i came across this other cat that i battled in the spitkicker tour, and he battled some cat witht the same line he hit me with!! me and my crew was like ohh shit, cuz he was hatin on everybody sayin their flows was written-- so i will leave you with this, there is an art to makin your shit sound like a freestyle, its easy to meditate a fuck up just as it is to memorize a line,,,,,,,freestylin is cool, but its like crate diggin only a few cats really do it, others would rather buy a break beat CD or go to phatDRUMlopps.com and d-load the shit then actually gettin there fingers dusty,,,,i freestyle and do it well, but i dont stress it, if you are an MC you should be able to free, and naturally you should be able to battle if you can freestyle, that dont mean you will win the battle! peace--and besides most cats that battle cant write a song for shit
to me freestyling isn't that big of a deal. like rjny23 said as long as you're good live. but on the other hand i know when meand my boys are listening to a freestyle, there's nothing like hearing someone say somehting that makes you want to rewind it because you can't beleive someone would make that line up on the spot.
ed lover can freestyle!
as long as you are good live, youre dope.
but, i think freestylin is part of being an emcee. Battling, i guess is an extra.
