I read that some of you don't even use the quantize function in the MPC because it makes their beats sound lifeless and robotic. I got a question for u boys:
Where do you start sequencing your beats? Do you first record the hihat with the drum-pads while the melody/loop is playing in the background or do you start with the snare or kick...?
I tried so many nights, but the real groove and method is pretty hard to find. Hope you guys can help...
^ the man knows what he's talking about.
quantizing never sounds robotic if you know how to use it...there is no right setting...i change the timing at least 4 times in one beat...different instruments and drums need different timings and different smount of swing
1/8 will definitly sound robotic. Try 1/32 my friend. I always quantize drums. A good drummer is right on count. You couldnt even tell the difference probably except for the sounds, but not in the sequence.
do what ever you comfortable with.
first adjust the tempo tho. If i chop up a sample, i'll lay the hi-hat first so it's all on beat. but if it's a loop or something i'll just get the tempo right and then lay the hi-hat......put them on 1/8
everything else should fall pretty easily
Turn on the "count" and party along.
