?? So What Is The/are The Difference(s) Between Rap And Hip Hop ??
I, myself can't put a song in either catagory anymore..
some theories include:
-RAP is the music involved in a culture called HIP HOP
-RAP music is made primarily to dance to. HIP HOP is made to listen to.
-RAP is hand and hand with R & B. HIP HOP is hand and hand with Soul
-HIP HOP: DJ's, B-Boys, Graf, MC's.. RAP: Club scene, bass friendly, materialistic
-RAP is all about what you do. HIP HOP is what you feel
-RAP and HIP HOP are one in the same.. no difference
!! these aren't necessarily my views but some of the answers I've collected from different people !!
what do you think? I'd like to get some well thought out answers.. like I said I can't point out rap or hip hop anymore
and I'm not looking for the difference between COMMERCIAL and UNDERGROUND either..
Take it from some one who was there and knows people who were around it when it began
"Hip Hop" and "Rap" were names created by media. When this art form began it was parties at parks and apartments called "Jams"
Dating back as far as 1974
"Emcees" would talk mainly to big up the dj set to let people know who they were jamming with.
Originally it was urban black culture but now that many races have embraced it. Hip hop culture is the best way to describe B-boying, Graf, Turntablism, and M.Cing or rapping.
You don't have to rap to be hip hop
and you don't have to be hip hop to rap
just like you don't have to be latino to speak spanish.
IT's all labels to indentify things.
So according to media hip hop is the culture and rap is apart of it. We just went along with it.
P.S. Media Heard people like "Busy B" repeatidly saying "To the hip hop a hibby to the hibby the hip hop ya don't stop"
He was just telling people to move and get into the sounds.
Truth shall be seen
"LISTEN" to me, sunn ...
let me break it down for yous.
in ROCK music = you SING.
in HIPHOP music = you RAP.
POINT BLANK -
that's how it is.
rap is one syllable, three letters, and only has one vowel and two consanants. hip hop on the other hand consists of two vowels, two syllables, and four consanants.
yes, while hip-hop is a culture and rap is its music, the music industry (majors) has co-oped the term "rap" music, and defines it as all things they want to sell to the world as "hip-hop". therefore, any mtv video/hot 97 joint is rap and therefore, hip-hop. the problem of the definition is that as the majors bomb us with their versions, the pure sh+t finds no audience. the industry's determination to totally control a "culture" is sending it "underground".
sorry to bring "commercial" and "underground" back into the discussion, but its hard not to.
I say rap music is just that rap music - beats with someone rapping over it. But hip hop music includes that and other styles of music too, like some electro songs and scratching songs. Hip Hop itself is the culture.
rap is an element of hip hop. hip hop is everday life. i guess many think that rap is the generalized shit about "money, cash, hoes" and hip hop is taking it back to the elements of the mc and dj with no hooks on the songs which is true but its very subjective.
read two posts up ^^ krs probably stated it best
Rap is a kind of music, or TO RAP is something that you do.
Hip Hop is a culture. One of its aspects is the genre of music called RAP.
Often these words are mixed up, but in essence, this is truth.
^ didnt krs say that?
ya there is a difference between the two
-Rap is something you do
-HipHop is something you live
ya'll ant ready
I respect your belief, my friends, but the answer isn't so obvious..
It began as both hip hop and rap as being the same thing.. rap as a verb and hip hop as a noun..
now the media puts labels on everything. In the same magazine, on the same web site etc.. there are songs catagorized as rap and songs catagorized as hip hop.. I've done some reading on it and found no consistant answer.. hip hop and rap have been split into different catagories by MANY people and unless there are a lot of "dumb bitches" out there.. I'd like to know why this catagorization exists..
but your answer is a valid one
i regret calling you a dumb bitch, so don't take that shit personal.
had to let it out, because you were merely asking a dumb question.
its the same fucking thing.
It began as Hip Hop...when it blew up, people called it Rap...Rap became the more popular term for what originally was called Hip Hop....now, people use both...theres no difference...its the same fucking thing.
there is no difference you dumb bitch.
